Brrrr - What are you doing to keep warm

It really feels like winter now. What happened to that mild weather? Set to hover around freezing for the rest of the week at least.
Apart from lots of thin but warm layers and hot drinks what else to do?
Just about to go round and make sure all upstairs curtains closed and doors shut, which reduces heat loss.
I have ordered more fleecy blankets from Zara home sale. And some new merino gloves from the outdoor shop.
Sit with laptop on knees instead of table...
I have also bought a fan heater so that if I am at home I can just heat the room I am in, instead of whole 3 stories.
Other thoughts on keeping warm?

i have a sneaking feeling that barristers are not allowed to wear trouser suits, still. Is that true.
pashminas can be added as well, over a suit.

Wrong, wrong whatis ! I meant I was leaning on my vertical radiator with skirt hitched up to warm my bum. There now you have made me tell everybody blush

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 01-Feb-12 13:06:40

Oh ok! Ill believe you H. Thousands wouldn't! grin

Nothing wrong with warming whatever needs warming. (My DD's got those vertical radiators. I can see what they're for now smile)

Just been sticking insulation foam around the letterbox . It is allowing in an arctic gale. Will get told off but we don't often have easterly winds like this. Stay at home folks! The windchill out there puts it way below zero.

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 01-Feb-12 13:14:44

I've been out on my bike. My ears are glowing - now I'm home! smile

jeni Wed 01-Feb-12 13:17:45

Just been round the farmers market which is just outside our door.man,is it cold out out there. Our courtroom seems warm in comparison.

JessM Wed 01-Feb-12 13:19:59

Yr reckless!
For less active people though it is not a good idea. Wind chill takes it down to the equivalent of -10 or -15 something like that. Bad for the heart.

bagitha Wed 01-Feb-12 13:24:49

When we lived in Oslo, we felt colder when the temperature outside went up to about -10, because it was damper even though, technically, it was warmer. Just wondering now if weather people have a name for that. We've got wind chill. Do they talk about damp chill?

jeni Wed 01-Feb-12 13:30:29

jessM not reckless just needed to buy some leeks
I did pass up onthe gorgeous pippins homemade doughnuts, stuffed with homemade fillings![yearn] emoticon
I AM DIETING!

I've got one of those slinky type things like whatis but asda's own, only £8.00 in the sale right now it's lovely and warm and I either put my arms through it or just use it like a blanket. Quite thin but surprisingly warm.

Just been for a pub lunch and then for a lovely walk by Chichester Harbour to walk it all off - the sun was bright but the wind was fierce. Luckily my lovely new down coat kept me so warm that I had to take my gloves off and even so my hands stayed toasty warm. Let's hope my coat works as well next week up in the NW Highlands too.

Just been looking at Chichester harbour on the Hungry Sailors ITV programme quilting. Just the thing to blow the cobwebs away, and such fabulous views.

Quiltinggran Wed 01-Feb-12 16:13:49

Yes, Carol, the cobwebs certainly got well and truly blown away. Chichester Harbour is great with lovely little coastal villages and brilliant pubs and Bosham is one of my favourite places of all anywhere.

yogagran Wed 01-Feb-12 21:10:23

Oooh - I love Bosham, where the tide comes right up into the street and you must be careful where you park your car
Lovely pub nearby in Chidham quilting - The Old House at Home

Quiltinggran Wed 01-Feb-12 22:06:48

Guess what, yogagran the Old House at Home is where we had lunch today!!

yogagran Wed 01-Feb-12 22:27:36

Was it good? One time that we went there it was changing hands that very day so was in chaos.
Must go back to Bosham very soon, I think it's at its best at this time of year when it's quiet and peaceful

Grans in France (in particular) will like this if you can access it:

Yep, the continental climate is living up to it's name, and is due to become even colder apparently. Very very cold today and the wind chill makes it doubly unpleasant. However we have loads of [sunshinesunshine!
Thanks for the link.

jeni Thu 02-Feb-12 08:39:05

Morning.
As you cantell from the ungodly hour at which I'm up, I'm off to work.
I do love my job, honestly. But on freezing mornings like this ,I have a distinct disinclination to emerge from my lovely warm, comfortable, cosy, gorgeous bed.
Oh well, at least it's a beautiful morning.the sun is shining, there's a slight pink haze over whales and the Bristol channel looks blue. Wonderful.
Have good day folks!

JessM Thu 02-Feb-12 08:39:39

phew the wind seems to have dropped. Set to get milder here by Monday. Hope you are cosy Butternut

Annobel Thu 02-Feb-12 08:50:42

Whales, jeni, in the Bristol Channel?

MaggieP Thu 02-Feb-12 09:32:01

I saw a few snowflakes falling this morning here in Norfolk but now the sun is coming out.
