Brrrr - What are you doing to keep warm

It really feels like winter now. What happened to that mild weather? Set to hover around freezing for the rest of the week at least.
Apart from lots of thin but warm layers and hot drinks what else to do?
Just about to go round and make sure all upstairs curtains closed and doors shut, which reduces heat loss.
I have ordered more fleecy blankets from Zara home sale. And some new merino gloves from the outdoor shop.
Sit with laptop on knees instead of table...
I have also bought a fan heater so that if I am at home I can just heat the room I am in, instead of whole 3 stories.
Other thoughts on keeping warm?

That sounds like banging your head against a brick wall so that it feels good when you stop, or starting the day with a tablespoonful of castor oil after which nothing - but nothing- could possibly be as bad grin

goose and whatis
Take this tip: When you get up, put, your feet in the coldest water you can bear. Just for a minute each foot. After that your feet will be toasty all day!

Fortunately my PayPal account seems to have lapsed so I am safe from slipper temptation but I think I can safely forecast the end of the cold snap and a return to milder if not tropical weather - I have just ordered a new pair of sheepskin boots.

Libradi Fri 03-Feb-12 19:47:30

They really are warm and comfy Annobel smile

Annobel Fri 03-Feb-12 19:07:56

Libradi, you put temptation in my way and I fell!

Oh ** we are on a thread about trying to keep warm in a cold snap and strayed onto the topic of icecream. sorry.
ogm yes I would say that if the boiler is struggling keep it on at about 15 deg. Missed out on a warm front grant did it? Leave the curtains drawn and the doors closed at night. That helps a bit in the morning.

JessM Fri 03-Feb-12 18:39:45

Well if you ever go again, whatis you must go. Produce heaven. Read my review of where to get the best bacon sandwiches ever on the eating out section.
Did you go to Verdi's icecream parlour? Pinnacle of the Italian/Welsh icecream tradition. Best location ever.
(Fond memories of Fulgoni's lovely icecream in Porthcawl and Joe's in Swansea as well)

whatisamashedupphrase Fri 03-Feb-12 14:56:34

No. You have to go back up the peninsula for that, don't you? And then along.

I like those little shops at Mumbles. smile

janthea Fri 03-Feb-12 13:07:38

Hot milk with a large dollop of brandy always warm me up!! grin brew

JessM Fri 03-Feb-12 13:02:47

whata... did you not make it to Swansea market. Makes me hungry to think about it. Now what shall I have for lunch.

bagitha Fri 03-Feb-12 11:26:56

And yours made me smile, em. grin I'm taking 15 cubs to Dalguise in March. Some of them have been before. However, we're lucky here to have plenty of runnin' aboot space – boggy woodland, pebbly beach, trees to climb, etc. – on the scout site so they do get plenty of baptisms in mud. The difficulty is 'discouraging' them from going too far! e.g. I had to ask one very skilled little boy to please NOT teach the others how to come down a tree head first!

em Fri 03-Feb-12 11:07:02

Bagitha your post made me smile. We took city kids to Dalguise in Perthshire and for many it was the first experience of being out 'in the wild'. On one forest walk one child stumbled over a tree root and was most annoyed with those people who leave big lumps of wood lying around! Another, climbing a tree and encountering sap on the bark, decided that 'they' must have put glue on to stop children falling off.

White whales!grin

whatisamashedupphrase Fri 03-Feb-12 10:18:38

Jess - love the Gower coastline, especially Worms Head. And wandering round the little shops at Mumbles (the main shopping centre eh?! grin)

whatisamashedupphrase Fri 03-Feb-12 10:16:36

That's just like me Goose. Nothing warms my feet!

goose1964 Fri 03-Feb-12 10:06:30

I have icy feet despite having thick socks and slippers on - the rest of me is fine

JessM Fri 03-Feb-12 09:47:28

Greatnan - I was going to respond to you earlier. But then I got a call from DS1 ! This happens rarely and I have not spoken much to him or GKds since I last visited. Short and sweet but there you go... Most likely to call me when there is some worry to share and no exception.

Anyway - what I was going to say was that it is for strong independent women to let go and cry sometimes. You get used to being the strong one. But you are grieving inside about the estrangement with your DD and her family.
But maybe, that is what friends are for and your friend would understand.
Have you at least told her what is going on?

JessM Fri 03-Feb-12 09:34:04

Includes some of the top views in the UK... Three Cliffs and Worms Head...
Hi Butternut nearly nearly there! Got to do some minor crosschecking in the next few days and I think I might have a title now...

bagitha Fri 03-Feb-12 09:03:40

The Oxfordshire school DDs 1 and 2 went to used to do field trips to the Gower Peninsula. I remember DD1 telling me that when she went (age 12), she was the only kid in the group who had ever walked on anything other than a pavement!!!! She'd had plenty of experience as we used to go up to Sutherland and Wester Ross on hill-walking holidays from her babyhood onwards. Those field trips certainly broadened the experience of kids.

Oldgreymare Fri 03-Feb-12 08:35:32

JessM... you're quite right. When I could ignore the smoke and smells we discovered some lovely places. Looking for fossils (and finding them) in a shallow river bed up one of the lesser known valleys, the Gower coast. And, after all, Madame Patti did build her pavilion there.
Keeping warm, kept the heating on (low) all night last night for the first time. Can't decide whether that is a good move, at least the old boiler didn't have to struggle to get the temp up to something approaching reasonable this morning!

Butternut Fri 03-Feb-12 08:27:50

Our thermometer by the back door read -10 this morning, but we have masses of sunshine, and am currently reading 'A Student of Weather'!
Hope you're feeling less tired Jess - have you finished the book yet?
Stay warm......smile

JessM Fri 03-Feb-12 07:51:48

Yes we are getting off lightly this year... unless we all get snowed on this weekend. Met. is a little uncertain about where and when...
Do boys still find that funny in UK I wonder flower.. or are they all inside watching telly and playing with their xboxes.
You've got the idea there greatnan with all those leg layers. 3 is just about right when its well below zero. Glad to hear that those pesky possums, a curse be on their descendents, are making themselves useful inside your boots. Enjoy the skiing.
