I am going to Corfu soon. In most places I go abroad I get badly bitten.
10 of us (family) went to Bulgaria once and I was the only one who was bitten. The bites were so severe I had to go to the hospital. I've never suffered so badly since, but still get bitten - they seem to like me for some reason! Can anyone recommend a good repellent please?

I read some where that mosquitos home in on blood temperature-so go and sit by someone with a cold!

KatyK Thu 25-Jul-13 14:24:23

Maybe that's my problem then. I haven't had a cold for about 30 years.

Take Brewers yeast tablets - mozzies hate the smell on your skin.

Avoid wearing dark clothes, especially black, so my travelling friend tells me!

I use the Avon one and it does work. I get bitten and end up with nasty lumps and taking Piriton helps when bitten and I also use lavender lotion if itchy as it soothes it. Hope this helps

Thank you everyone. I will keep all these tips in mind for next year's trip!
Plus my trusty Jungle Formula.

Marmite works for me plus Jungle Formula. Also covering up with floaty skirts and long sleeved tops - I stay pale and interesting.

People in the Highlands of ~Scotland and even SAS troops swear by Avon Woodland Fresh Dry Oil Spray. It is the only Avon sold over the counter in this country. Lumberjacks use it. I have found it invaluable when fighting the Scottish Midge. Give it a try. It is the GREEN one, may have changed name but still in Green bottle.

NFK , I find that intriguing , May I ask what you actually do with the Marmite ?
I go to Mauritius each year , and am never too proud too seek advice !!

NfkDumpling Fri 30-Aug-13 18:21:55

Eat it thickly spread on my morning toast Nonu. I love the stuff. I think it must ooze from my pores and frighten the little beggars away. grin

Sorry Jenny, didn't see your post. Was so excited about sharing my Avon experiences. Good isn't it?

Salamander, yes yes yes. and may Highlanders too. The green one though, used to be called Woodland Fresh.

I use Avon and its the best(and the bonus is that it moisturises at the same time!) and it smells nice!

I get bitten by all flying bitey things. One thing that works is when you are outside on a balcony or patio, hang up a cloth sprayed with with clove or laurel oil or pour the oil into a small lamp and burn it.

It also helps to remember to put the insect repellent on. [itchy emoticon]

Drink a teaspoon of Marmite in a mug of water (Add milk or cream to taste) every day. It makes your sweat a little yeasty and most bugs don't like that. In the mid '6o's, in Borneo and Malaya the RAF made me eat a yeast tablet (£0.50 size) at every meal.

I have read that coconut oil is a useful insect repellant but I haven't tried it myself. I can, however, vouch for the fact that it soothes insect bites better than any antiseptic cream.

I always get bitten no matter what I use - even Jungle Formula didn't do the trick. And the bites are so irritating and itchy and unpleasant. Someone recommended a South African product to me - it's called Peaceful Sleep and comes in a small stick (a bit like a fat Pritt Stick). I found some online and we all used it on a trip to South East Asia this summer. Amazing stuff - doesn't stink, easy to apply and works! No bites - a miracle given we were in areas rife with mosquitoes. Can't recommend highly enough

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 05-Sept-17 16:40:49

Pretty sure I found it cheaper but this is the one - lasted three of us for two weeks with plenty left over www.techniblock.co.uk/peaceful-sleep-insect-repellent-c2x23118277

Ohhh just saw that's an aerosol version. Hey ho you get the idea anyway

Salamander, I use the Avon Skin So Soft moisturiser and find it works just as well. I noticed they were selling it in a shop near Loch Lomond in Scotland as a midge deterrent! It comes in a spray bottle and has a pleasant scent and no worries about nasty chemicals. Also reasonably priced.

My budget is no more than 200$..... I think it is enough, Can anyone help me suggesting best recommend for me? Please clear my mind with your kind suggestions.

DH is a permanent target for biting bugs and his immune system goes haywire. What would be a little bite to us turns into a large red lump on him. The only repellent he has found that works is from Life Systems from Go Outdoors. It's not cheap but it works. He also takes antihistamines from March to October so if some little blighter does take a nip his immune system doesn't go into overdrive.
