I had an eye test yesterday and for the first time I need reading glasses.
I would like to know if any of you have had experience of buying glasses on-line.When I looked last night they were so much cheaper than any available in the high street.
Are there any problems that you could share with me and would buying on-line be ok or should I stick to the high street?

Shelflife

I buy ready readers from Amazon. I asked my optician if they were detremental, her reply was " if they do the job then there is no problem , I wear them myself " She even advised me what strength to order! They are cheap and colourful, I don't have to worry about losing them or sitting on them! - have a pair in each room .

I THINK THE OP MIGHT ( JUST MIGHT) HAVE SORTED THE PROBLEM BY NOW.

I’ve worn reading glasses for ages, and recently have bought some online (where the selection is better). They’re fine, and the multipack means there’s always another pair handy if I’ve temporarily mislaid some.

I used reading glasses for a while but got fed up with taking them on and off, sitting on them, loosing them, so went to Specsavers and got bifocals, now wear them all the time. To hell with vanity, now I can read and do close up work without hassle.

I have just been to Specsavers for some reading glasses. I'm not really bothered what they really look like but I've ordered a pair for £39 which I think is great value. £29 for the frame and lens and the extra £10 as I would like the lens shaved a bit thinner.

I've thought for a long time that the specs; industry is often a racket - ie opticians prescribe fancy expensive specs when they aren't needed.
Even glasses for driving - mine cost 150€ and they're rubbish, I only got them at husband's insistence because I drove badly during a long distance trip - I was tired!
I've worn reading glasses since I was 40, now have 250 strength which I buy at the opticians for 15€ (about £12.)

I have 2 pair of varifocals for general use, BOGOF from the optician.
2 pair of prescription reading glasses also BOGOF, because varifocals aren't great for susained reading.
I also have a pair of prescription glasses especially for the main computer with monitor - because the reading/varifocals don't work well with the distance to the monitor.

Then.... there are cheapo glasses lying around in kitchen, bottom of handbag, for reading in bed etc.

And I don't take prescription specs on holiday....they are too expensive to misplace.

I have stopped wearing my glasses for everyday , except for driving of course, , rightly or wrongly , who knows, so everything is in "soft focus" rather nice actually !
I am managing very well actually, to my surprise , just wondering do one"s eyes change as one gets older ?

I buy most of my glasses (reading and computer distance) from spex4less.com.

My eye tests have all been done at what is now Boots Opticians, and I must say I was surprised at how their prices have fallen since Boots took over from Dolland & Aitchison - where one expected an £80 price tag there was now a £25 ticket...

I've recently bought from www.worldofglasses.co.uk. The glasses there are as good as any I've bought on the high street at a fraction of the price

Sorry tim - we get overnight advertisers quite often grin

For some time now I have bought my glasses from glassesframesandlenses - no problems. Always a human being on the phone to discuss your needs. No problems with visual accuracy - I send an old pair (which they return) for them to double check that they have the measurements right. I really have had no problems and would highly recommend it as a a way of saving money. I have a very difficult prescription and in addition need thin lenses and varifocals and they manage this just fine. Simple reading glasses will be a doddle for them.

I might give them ^^ a try, for tv and reading.

I don't think that's really an ad, jess. Tim just seems to be saying that he bought his specs from this online shop and he's pleased with them. I read it more like a review. However, HQ will decide.

When I bought my last pair the girl tinkered with them to make them more comfortable; the pair before had hurt me slightly over the bridge of my nose and she said I should have gone back to the shop to have them adjusted. They tried to get my to buy varifocals last time and I refused, but I've realised why in that I've always walked around with my reading glasses on but the latest ones, being stronger make that impossible. I've now got 7 pairs of glasses that I can read with but, blow me, still can't find a pair when I need them confused.
