Can you go without booze for 31 days?

I'm doing Alcohol Concern's Dry January campaign, for the heck of it, and with colleagues at work.

I've been practicing this month (want to lose a bit of weight) and already I realise, that even though I'm not a daily drinker, it's actually not that easy, because when I feel like having my occasional glass of wine, I want one dammit! And in these winter months I also like a tiny tot of whisky in a medicine glass with a shot of lemon juice and honey of a night tchsmile.

Anyway, the campaign is to raise awareness of people's drinking habits, so I thought I'd give them a little plug, because that's not a bad thing.

I could never understand the curry and wine, I have to say. OH will have an Indian beer and I water.

I can go without alcohol for 365 days. It doesn't figure much in my life if at all.

I wouldn't want to tbh. We don't drink much at home, but a meal out in a pub or a curry house just calls out for a nice glass of wine.

Easily, we enjoy wine, or a single malt from time to time- and our local tipple is absinhte (it was born here, and NO it does NOT make you mad, surprisingly enough)- but only socially with friends.

Haven't had a drink for more than 40 years. Took me a long time to decide that alcohol doesn't like me and I don't like it.

Agus Tue 17-Dec-13 18:36:07

The answer from me is, I wouldn't want to. I have a leisurely glass of wine early evening which I enjoy and when that is finished, I wouldn't want anymore. If for whatever reason I don't have a glass of wine some evenings, it doesn't bother me.

One of my abiding memories is of a lovely, smiley, happy Christian friend miming 'Sex and the single girl'. She took off her wedding ring with a flourish, and lay on the floor in missionary position bouncing her bum up and down - we all thought she was giving birth because of the strange faces she pulled grin

tchgrin absent

The mind boggles!!

I was definitely not sober when I did News at Ten. (nude-hat-hen) blush

It's DBH who passes me my two weeny glasses of red wine a week, one on friday night and one on saturday night, as an aperitif. If he's not in, I forget all about it. I have drunk an awful lot of mulled wine over the past two weeks, but I don't think I shall have consumed enough alcohol by New Year for my liver to need a detox, which is why most people I know do it.

annodomini Tom and Jerry? That's a doddle. Try doing Fanny By Gaslight! grin

Nonu Tue 17-Dec-13 17:54:30

Iwould not have a dry January .
I would have some wine on Friday & Saturday during that period !
Suppose I am doomed .

Hmmm

KatyK Tue 17-Dec-13 17:46:52

I don't think I could give up alcohol for 31 days nor want to really. tchblush

JessM Tue 17-Dec-13 17:02:54

It doesn't really agree with me - I don't sleep brilliantly and alcohol makes things worse not better. I do like the tastes of the drinks though - white wine, cold lager etc
I don't think I would notice if I didn't have a drink for a month. Neither would anyone else.

annodomini Tue 17-Dec-13 17:00:41

I can take it or leave it and probably go for months at a time without a drink. I live on my own and only drink socially. Christmas will be slightly boozy as my DiL is very hospitable. Try miming Tom and Jerry in Family Charades while under the influence of alcoholic ginger wine.

Soutra Tue 17-Dec-13 16:58:09

Of course!!
(Do they have to be consecutive days though?) tchgrin

Charleygirl Tue 17-Dec-13 16:38:16

I decided that after I passed my driving test ( a few years ago now!) I would never drink and drive and I have never broken that promise to myself.

I drink I suppose a bottle of wine every 6-8 weeks or longer over 3 evenings with a nice meal at home. I would not bother giving up for January because I drink so little.

ninathenana Tue 17-Dec-13 16:36:59

I can't remember the last time I had alcohol. That's not to say I don't like it. I enjoy a nice glass of wine when I'm out.
Normally I would say a month of abstinence would be a breeze but as I have a big birthday in January which will require a few glasses to celebrate. I will have to pass tchgrin
Good luck to those taking part.

FlicketyB Tue 17-Dec-13 16:31:22

Not teetotal, but do not like most alcoholic drinks, generally I would always prefer a soft drink. I probably go 31 day without alcohol several times a year and do not really notice.

Tegan Tue 17-Dec-13 16:28:36

I can't remember the last time a had a full glass of anything [had a small amount of wine a couple of times oop north ie about half an inch in the bottom of a glass with my meal] and someone bought a drink in the pub that they wanted me to try [two thirds whiskey one part cherry brandy; it was gorgeous] so I had a sip of it. But, if I wasn't allowed to drink at all the contents of my drinks cupboard would start calling to me. In fact, the whiskey drink is calling to me now; if I had the ingredients in the house I could be on a slippery slope to somewhere.

grannyactivist Tue 17-Dec-13 16:24:19

I was teetotal for very many years and although I do like an occasional glass of wine or a small shot of sloe gin or other homemade brew (usually at Christmas), I frequently go without for a few weeks at a time.

tanith Tue 17-Dec-13 16:09:29

I too am an abstainer but through choice its now 35 yrs and I don't miss it. My son does always gives it up for January but I think he soon makes up to it . Good to bring attention to it Grannyknot.

Mishap Tue 17-Dec-13 15:58:49

20 years for me without alcohol! - not by choice; it just makes me very sick and gives me the squits, so I decided not to bother! I don't really miss it now. Good luck with your abstemious January!

tiggypiro Tue 17-Dec-13 15:57:37

I think the more I thought about not having a glass (or two) of wine the more I would want one and guess which thought would win !

janeainsworth Tue 17-Dec-13 15:54:46

I once gave up alcohol for Lent, as a friend was doing it.
Although I managed it, I've decided it's not really for metchwink

janerowena Tue 17-Dec-13 13:51:42

I know quite a few people that do this and found that although I only drink a very small glass of red wine twice a week for most of the year, I do want the odd tot of sloe gin on a snowy winter's evening and maybe some mulled wine. I think January is bleak enough as it is - but if it were to take place in Spring I would be fine with it, as that is when I start to realise that I need to lose weight if I am to look reasonable by Summer.
