Has anyone had trouble with Omeprozol?

It is very interesting that some people taking this have IBS - I always think it should be called IGS - Irritable Gut Syndrome, because I have no doubt that the whole gut is affected. I always feel very sick in the morning and only get over that when I have eaten and drunk something - it is as if the gut does not know which way to go and the presence of food to get stuck into reminds it that the only way is down!

My OH (a GP) always refers to it as "Bipolar Gut" - it is an interesting analogy and certainly rings true for me - I never know what delights I am to be presented with each day - it could go one way or the other.

I now only use omeprazole for short periods when I know that I have eaten something that is likely to give me heartburn. As I said I have lots of small polyps in my stomach which I know are the result of taking the tablets regularly for several years - but I went off the tablets this with medical back-up and it would not be the right thing for others necessarily. Ask the doc!

like most health supplements some work for you and some dont...for me the enzyme digest works ...

No reason to think that they do anything except perhaps if you had had massive sections of your intestine removed or something. And then why would a random pill have the right kind and the right dosage?

I thought enzyme tablets were to stop you farting having embarrassing trouble at the other end.

They don't work.

Sounds like some of you are having this drug prescribed for reflux and others for inflammation/risk of ulcers. The drug cuts off acid production in the stomach lining.
If you are having symptoms of inflammation or ulcers (e.g. bleeding) then you should definitely not take yourself off them without consulting your doctor - ulcers can kill.
Have to say, Dolly that the enzyme pills look like a rip off to me.

enzyme digest are tablets you take with food to aid digestion i did start taking them a couple of years ago after gall bladder removal....i did have a long break from them but i was having a bad time with my i.b.s about a month ago so have started taking them again...im hoping they will help stop the acid reflux so i can stay off the omerprazole..

well im trying to come off them myself...i decided to go cold turkey and see how i go...there were mixed reviews on line being the best way to come off them...its only been 4 days and as yet no problems so im keeping everything crossed...i dont want to go back on them due to the long term side effects ive read about!!!! i am taking an enzyme digest with every meal to aid digestion and ive a bottle of gaviscon in the medicine cupboard just in case...

No, but have looked at it in the past. Something that people use when trying to come off ppi's I believe. I read that, when you stop taking ppi's you end up with an increase in acid which means you feel so bad you have to go back onto them. Although, having a friend who became seriously ill with a stomach ulcer after taking ibuprofen without a ppi I would never advocate not taking them if needed [just a bit wary of them myself].

A friend of mine who had side effects from a PPI now takes the herbal remedy slippery elm. Seems to work for her but has anyone else tried it?

I've been on it for years to counteract the effect of arthritis medication, without which I would be very stiff and immobile. I didn't know about any long term effects, but isn't it depressing that in order to keep one part of you going, another has to suffer?

I have had no side effects (been taking it for almost 6 months) and when I don't take my 20mg or longer than two days I really feel it. I would like another alternative as I already have oestopenia and am concerned that the meds may mask future problems :-( Any suggestions?

i did some research on omerprazole this afternoon and i must say it was very worrying reading up on the long term effects! i am tempted to wean myself off them to see how i go...

I have found that there are various productions of omeprazole and only one type suits me. I have taken them for years as I take NSAIDS for osteo-arthritis. I couldn't manage without them.

Thanks that's interesting. Yes, Omeprazole . I've just got this weird indigestion thing but it didn't seem to help and gave me diarrhoea which set offthe IBS which had almost vanished after the hysterectomy a couple of years ago. I think you can buy Zantac in the chemist so I might give it a try.

ive been on it for sometime now as i have I.B.S. i take mine every evening before i go to bed as it seems to work better than taking it in the mornings..ive had no ill effects from it ..

It might be worth asking if you can change to something else; esomeprazole or Nexium for example.

broomsticks I have been taking 40mg Esomeprazole for three years [hiatus hernia] and have had no problems. If I stop, I'm in deep doodah!

I have been taking 20mg Omeprazole for years now and I have had no problems. It is great to be able to eat "normally" without constant Rennies. When on NSAIDs for sciatica I took 40mg a day for a wee while and it did make a huge difference,

I tried it but hD some bad side effects such a nausea and muscle pain. I was changed to Zantac and am fine on it.

I take Omeprazole every day without any problems. I've been on it for about four years now.

I have taken it in the past and now take it occasionally. It works, but caused me to have little polyps in my stomach - benign.

I've been taking it for 7 months following a frightening bleed caused by prescribed NSAIDs and I think it's giving me diarrhoea. My GP doesn't disagree (doesn't agree either!) but says I ought to keep on taking it as a bleed is life-threatening and diarrhoea isn't.

I take Lanzoprazole - the only relic of chemo was indigestion - but now that I am on Naproxyn it is needed too. Works very well for me.

I found it exacerbated my difficulties. I found Ranitidine better but am now free of medication, after 2-3 years of prescriptions by reducing gluten & yeast from my diet and taking a daily pro-biotic capsule. Feel digestively healthier than I have done in ages!
