Laparoscopic Surgery

When I had to have the open option but mine was a kidney op. I also have to have a catheter inserted every 6 months or so for a bladder scan. It isn't so bad really.

No, not when I had my laparoscopy.

Well, what a helpful lot you are. Thank you very much. Peppermint cordial will be on my list. By the way, back to the Scottish references, we were on the Firth of Forth last year, we sailed up it. Also, I am gaining a granddaughter-in-law in 5 weeks time and she comes from the banks of the Firth. Lovely girlie. Lucky for me she is a Nurse in the Royal Navy and is moving from Plymouth to Portsmouth just in time for me to go into hospital.

I had keyhole surgery to deal with a strangulated hernia. I was sore afterwards but recovered quickly.

Hi Glassie. Some patients do experience painful wind and you should ask the nurse for some peppermint cordial which will help disperse it.

I had 4 laparoscopies during the 80s and always took my own peppermint cordial with me and as there will be a jug of water and tumbler on top of your side cabinet you can pour your own as and when necessary.

A much less intrusive procedure and I was back on my feet after a couple of days. The incision the surgeon made 4 times in the same area on me makes it look as if I have two belly buttons. All the best

Had my gall bladder our around two years ago by this method. I am a big scaredy cat and not at all brave so,worried and worried ,looked it up on the Internet ,read up on it etc etc etc. Came the day it was fine , I was fine although not allowed to drive for two weeks or work I can honestly say I felt well enough to return to work two days after (i didnt but I resumed normal household routine tasks) I had a slight niggly pain the morning after but it only lasted around half an hour and didn't need to take any pain killers. The sutures were out within days and everything was back to normal. I felt stupid as I had put off this op due to being frightened and consequently endured pain and discomfort that I needn't have. The very small scars have almost faded and are difficult to detect. Good luck with your op.

I knew someone who moved to Arran as well [think she ran a shop there]. Her name was Lynn and she came from Birmingham [must be in her sixties now].

I had laparoscopic investigation and it was a breeze. Two of my DDs have had laparoscopic surgery to ovaries for cysts and no problems. Please do not worry.

Remember my consultant passing my bed and asking each time if I have passed wind. I was most offended and said 'NO I haven't' He was across the bay seeing to another patient when I started to pass wind - it was like the sound of a child releasing air from a balloon and went on and on - Thats the way he smiled. The next day he walked past and said ' Have you opened you bowels yet' - 'I have only just learned how to pass wind' I replied.

grannyisland - I looked out on Arran every day of my life until I was 17. We lived in Ardrossan and our upper windows had a view of the Firth. From the North Shore we could watch the ferry (the Glen Sannox) going out in the morning and coming back in the early evening. Sorry this is a dreadful deviation from the OP! Glassie, I hope your procedure goes well. Long, long ago when I had a laparoscopic sterilisation, I was pumped full of air. It took a few days to be expelled but wasn't painful.

Just as Charleygirl says. I had laproscopic for removal of a kidney. An incision for the instrument to remover ovary and another for the 'camera' about 1" across for each. There was another but not sure what they popped in there.

Infortunately I had too much fat around my kidney so they had to revert to open but that was ok too. You will be fine. Ooh my friends used to live on Arran and my cousin.

I live on Arran in the Firth of Clyde. Often referred to as Scotland in miniature.

I had a bit of pain below my shoulders at the front which they said was the air, but a couple of pain killers sorted it out and it didn't last. All the best for a speedy recovery.

I think its more the thought of all the air they put in you that is worrying me abit. I have read that it stays around for days/weeks in some cases. Did it affect you.

I had keyhole surgery for the removal of my gall bladder & it was fine. The three small scars can hardly be seen now 5 years on. I did take longer to recover than expected but I think that was down to experiences before it was done. Many went home very quickly. As always a lot depends on the skill & experience of the surgeon - I made sure I had a good one. However, it's been around long enough now for many more to have the skills.

It should not be a problem. It means a small nick in your tum with a couple of sutures rather than a larger incision. You will be up on your feet sooner and it may be done as a day case. I found with laparascopic surgery that I did not have as much pain as I had expected but each person is different. Good luck.
