I was recently looking at my NHS app and saw that I was diagnosed with CKD stage 3 last September. No one told me and I’m now in a spin trying to h to work out how to handle it. Lots of conflicting advice online. I’ve been given Statins and aspirin. Would like to know how strictly you stick to the avoid what to eat list. Finding it quite difficult but trying not to reach stage 4. I’m 72. Any advice appreciated.

The reason I say that Galen is that the Specialist told my brother, he has around 5 years before he will be needing Dialaysis and then that he will live around 8 years on Dialaysis. So he has bsically given him 13 years to live?

Paula good god no!
It's a reprieve from a death sentence and followed by a successful transplant is a new life.
I've known a couple of 70+ year olds have kidney transplants and play full rounds of golf.
My DH and myself sailed a 27' yacht from Exmouth to the Isles of Scilly while he was on CAPD. We re supplied with dialysis bags at St Mary's arranged by Frisenius.
I couldn't take many clothes as most of the storage space was taken by dialysis supplies and our two children.

Wow, great for your brother, I don't have much experience of diabetes, I know that there is Type 1 and Type 2 I think that one of them,( poss type 2? )can be linked to being over weight, but not sure I have it all completely right.

So how did your brother end up not needing any meds, is it all just down to diet?

How fortunate for your brother to have caring family to support him. I'm guessing he doesn't have a wife or partner, as you went with him? Does he live near to you?

so going on Dialysis is not a death sentence then??

Just want to add my brother was a Diabetic--I say was because he no longer needs insulin or any medication for diabetes.

Sure no problem.
Kidney from deceased unrelated doner.
Normal lifestyle for getting on for 20years when he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer of colon. Lived for almost another 18/12 following that.
Each time he was called for a prospective match they called three people. He got it on the third go.
One kidney had been flown down from Glasgow on 30th November. It wasn't compatable with anyone! We reckoned they should have tried matching it against a bottle of whiskey!

Yes nina she gave him booklets, she was very helpful Galen you say your DH was on Dialysis, my broether is at stage 4. Did things go well with you DH transplant and how did it happen, was it someone in the family or a Donor, was his death due to his Kidney problems, hope its ok to ask. Obviouslt this is something effecting us at the moment Thank you

They are and so are mushrooms, spinach, avocado and many others. If you google potassium high foods you can get a list.
When DH was on low K and protein diet I made ice cream with full fat cream to get calories into him. Recommended by dietician (she also said my ice cream was gorgeous and could she have some more?£

I see your point Paula8 it must be frustrating, but as others have said 'needs must'. I assume she suggested what he should be eating?

Anne58 Fri 27-Jun-14 15:18:55

I think that bananas are quite high in potassium, but as I can't stand the things.........

Galen Fri 27-Jun-14 15:00:36

I'm afraid she's right.
When my husband was alive and going into renal failure I had to cope with a low potassium and protein diet. Then when he was on CAPD (dialysis) a high protein diet with fluid restriction.
Then following the transplant -
Heaven! A normal diet!

You do what you have to when your kidneys are poorly, dietician knows what she is talking about.

I went with my brother today to a Specialist at the hospital for his Kidney Disease--The Kidney Dietician told him that he must avoid Potasium and that fruit and veg contain loads of it--I Give Up!! she explained that due to his kidney problems he should not have too much of fruit and veg--I never thought I would hear those words coming from a Dieticians mouth sad
