Coping with the heat

I don't like it. But I'm almost certainly in the minority.
My feet and legs swell up and get puffy and I feel lethargic and achy. And I can't sleep at night. We have a fan going and windows open and I still feel hot and restless.

I like sunshine but I'll be glad to see temperatures dive a few degrees cooler!

We decided to get rid of the old CH boiler, and replace with new super duper efficient one.

Plumber came yesterday to clean the system out with some magic potion.

Ch has to be on in all radiators to get the potion to cleanse the system before the puts in the new boiler……………. Out and in its baking hot!!!

Whose idea was to do the rearrangement in the summer……….. its normally rains here in summer and is cool…….. Not this year, tomorrow I see we might have some haar .

Stansgran, duvets aren't all synthetic. I have been using the 4-tog very lightweight summer portion of my duck down duvet (Christmas present to self last year) and have not been overly bothered by the heat. The sheet and pillowcases are all cotton and I've dug out my most flimsy cotton nightie.

Isn't it peculiar how we all find the weather so different in coping with. I love it, the only time I get hot is walking up the challenging hills on the Downs, but the rest of the time feel really comfortable and sleep like a top, although I only have a sheet over me - nothing else.

If I do get a bit warm like when I come back from walking I stand in a tepid shower and that sorts me out.

Mind you I don't do much during the hottest part of the day - I tend to sit around and read with cups of tea.

Don't wear synthetics and duvets are synthetic. Wear a loose cotton or silk nightdress which spends the day in a poly bag in the fridge . In Angkor wat I was given a cotton tube filled with gel which I soaked in cold water and wore round my neck. Not very stylish but kept me from boiling over. Duvets are very sweaty.

Love the sun and can't get enough of it.
Love either lounging on my patio (which I can't upload a pic of as since the last Apple upgrade it seems impossible) or even better
On the balcony of a cruise ship in the med.

I agree with you Tegan retirement does have many advantages and not having to get up for work is a great bonus.

Talking of baths I haven't had one for a couple of years. No I don't niff as I jump in the shower each morning. Although I am quite agile I find getting out of the bath tricky. I have to turn over on my hands and knees and one dodgy bent toe precludes me from getting any further. Anyway enough of my ablutions.

Hope you get a good night's sleep.

As one Brummie to another 'Ta ra a bit my duck'.

I was just thinking how glad I was that I was no longer at work; I've been doing a lot of cleaning today [it needed to be done blush]and I have to say that I smell horrible shock. All I've been wearing are baggy trousers and a bikini top and I'm dripping. Even the S.O. who dropped in earlier [and seems to use any excuse to deposit himself in the living room] couldn't wait to get back to his own place grin. I'm just going to sneak outside to put the dustbins out and then I'm having a cold bath. I've been sleeping downstairs on the sofa recently cause the living room is a lot cooler than the bedroom. I, too, am reaching a stage of being very tired from not sleeping properly.

How has anyone been coping over the weekend, Sat I was working in an air con ned shop, no probs and it rained but back to blazing heat sunday and today the same , I do like to see the sun but hate the heat to the point of wondering what is the mentality of those who go abroad for When I'm working outside, I have sweat running down my face so I cannot wear make up, my sun cream is pasted on all exposed bits so my face is shiny with sweat and cream, my hair is wet after a couple of hours, my computer keyboard was really wet from my hands and my deodorant stops working after a couple of hours no matter how much I apply it, if I sit I have wet patches on my bum so that's the reason I hate heat. Also today I noticed my feet stinking after working for about 4 hours, this is embarrassing but what can I do, I have a shower every day and use deodorant and foot powder. At home I can have a wash or shower but not at work.
Nights I sleep for about 10 mins and wake up soaked or so hot I cannot sleep, then I throw sheet off and drift off for another 10 mins then wake up again, the nights are so long and Im soooo tired. Anyone else got these probs. By the way my ideal holiday would be ot the North pole.lol

That sounds like a good system, Purpledaffodil.sunshine

I stuff the duvet into a wooden trunk in the summer and replace with a top sheet and a thin quilted throw which I keep folded at the bottom of the bed for an extra layer if winter nights are cold. Find this arrangement copes with most of the temperatures we get and the sheet alone is fine at the momentsunshine

The last few days here in my part of Scotland have been hot and sunny but without the unbearable heat and storms of the south. However, I'm about to get on a train for a few days in London and hope I'll cope! I remember how London could be in summer as I lived there for a few years after graduation! If it gets too much for me I'll duck into an air-conditioned shop for some retail therapy!

anneey Mon 21-Jul-14 07:47:19

I was forever kicking off my duvet.
I have now placed a lightweight blanket inside the cover, instead of the duvet....Lovely and cool at night now.
Trouble is, Duvets take up such a lot of cupboard space.
I have put it on the bed in spare room until the warm weather is over.
If I have a visitor, they might want to do the same, then I will have to store 2 Double Duvets. hmm

It is cooler up this way today, but yesterday it was 29C and a large choir plus orchestra had to sing in a guildhall before over 200 people and someone had painted all the windows shut... angry

Our rehearsal stared at 4pm, or should have done, because quite a few large ladies were to be seen racing out of the guildhall into the marketplace where the market was still going on, buying up all the sleeveless red tops they could lay their hands on. We are meant to have long sleeves, but there was rebellion in the ranks. As it was, it was like singing for two hours in a sauna fully dressed. All we could see was 200 people using their programmes to fan themselves with. I kept trying to visualise my day at the beach to keep myself sane.

Thankfully as we drove home at around 10.30pm we could see lightning, and rain arrived at about 5am so finally had a cooler night. I went to bed wearing a nightdress that had been wrung out in cold water, that helped hugely.

I'm right peed orff that the promised storms have passed us by in Sarf Lunnun. Had some rain very early and then nowt and it's now sunny and very humid. I'm staying inside today - yesterday was hellish in Rochester, and we had a job keeping baby DGD cool, but she coped better than I did in the end. I feel as if I'm walking through treacle in the heat, and being very overweight is adding to the discomfort.
To add to the misery, it's a fast day today but already I've weakened with a small piece of cheese. I'd better go and drink some water and stop myself from any further slip-upssad
We're heading North to Stamford with my father and stepmother for a couple of days tomorrow - I am hoping it will be a little cooler there.

Please, someone, send us some nice thunderstorms!

Aka Sat 19-Jul-14 16:30:19

Obviously moving eastwards Tegan my dogs still shaking. More storms moving in from the continent I'm being told.

There's the annual Beer Festival at Warwick Racecourse today!

Tegan Sat 19-Jul-14 16:20:39

Thunder now in the East Midlands. Saw lightning last night but didn't hear any thunder. Better go and see if the dog's ok in the kitchen; she might think bonfire night has come a bit early. We were in the eye of the storm at Newmarket Racecourse the other week and pretty scary it was. The rain is getting heavier and heavier shock.

Aka Sat 19-Jul-14 15:52:35

I've never heard thunder this loud it sounds like a bomb exploding overhead ever few minutes shock The rain is coming down in sheets and the gullies are filling up and overflowing. This is the West Midlands. Anyone else in tne eye of a storm?

janerowena Sat 19-Jul-14 12:52:13

Well yes, it would!

23C all last night, it was dreadful. Thunder and lightning all night, but the rain didn't arrive, so am sitting here wearing very little! I shall use a spray of water tonight, I think. It worked in france on holiday last year, dampening down all the bedclothes and nightwear and self. Although I did have to repeat it halfway through each night.

If all the summers are going to be like this, I am going to buy a cooling tower fan and stick some ice cubes in front of it.

granjura Sat 19-Jul-14 10:31:23

Absolutely boiling here for the last few days- but as our very old house has stone walls nearly 4ft wide- it always remains cool inside (and warm in winter... the record temp. in the area being minus 41.8C!!!)- and at night it always cools down so we can sleep with windows wide open and a breeze.
We are at 950m altitude (about 3500ft)- which helps.

rosequartz Sat 19-Jul-14 09:36:09

We keep meaning to go along that coast but something always prevents us. Hope we can get there soon.

Rain is pouring down this morning after a thunderstorm in the early hours.

merlotgran Fri 18-Jul-14 23:45:41

We haven't been there for years. Hoping to do a couple of B&B nights along the coast in September after the school holidays. Time for a return visit.

janerowena Fri 18-Jul-14 22:58:14

No, we do sometimes but got fed up with lack of parking. We go to Winterton-on-Sea - huge empty sandy beach, easy access, nice café and loos, lots of parking and a nature reserve for DBH. Plus a wonderful pub in the village where we have a meal before going home.
