Hip stuff - again!

Op is on Tuesday week. I am looking round my house and thinking about the changes I might need to make in order to manage in the initial few weeks.

I wondered if those of you who have done all this before might have some advice for me please.

The only chairs we have are dining chairs, or low sofas/armchairs. Ought I to try and borrow an upright armchair from somewhere, or did you find ways of coping? Were you asked to keep your feet up when siting down for the few weeks afterwards?

I am wondering if our bed might be a bit low as well.

Did you manage to get up and down stairs when you first went home?

I am also thinking abut my wee GC who are here a lot - I am thinking they might need to stay away initially in order not to jump on me/push me over! Was this a problem for anyone? I will miss them if they are not here!

How long did people need to take painkillers afterwards? I am hopeless on most painkillers - I just fall asleep - and get blocked up to the eyeballs! But I am also a pain wimp!

I am to have a spinal anaesthetic, but also a "light general anaesthetic" - I was quite keen just to have the spinal, but the surgeon says I would get too uncomfortable lying on my side for that length of time. I am hoping that it will be very light, as I vomit for England after GAs (and cannot take the main anti-emetic that is used). I am hoping that the "light GA" equates to a bit of sedation.

As you can see, I am finding things to worry about, so any of you old hands who might have advice would be welcomed with open arms!

Mishap.

I guess, as you have not posted again, that your op went ahead. Hope it went well and look forward to seeing you posting again soon.

Mishap Hope you're ok, we're all wishing you well! Maybe the throat was just nerves?

Hope you are OK for the op today and that all goes well, as I'm sure it will.

I have an appointment this afternoon to start the process for my hip replacement!

I am already on the books, so to speak (my surgeon wrote, on the discharge letter from the knee op, that the hip was urgent) so I am hoping and hoping to get a date soon. The pain each day can be unbearable until I take the drugs.

One hip, one cataract to go....

Could it be nerves Mishap? Or the start of a cold? Wishing you fortitude with whatever the day may bring anyway. Sending positive vibes and recommend Fishermans' Friends to help the throat! sunshine

Early morning and about to go to the hospital. But..........I started with a croaky throat at about 9.30 pm yesterday and I hoped it would go away, but it is still there this morning. I just do not know what to do now. I would have rung them yesterday but it was so late and I did not think there would be anyone around to make a decision. I may try ringing them now.

Oh, and good luck for tomorrow! flowers

You go for it, Mishap! It transformed DH's life. You can take a seat cushion, or even two, from a settee or another chair, and put it in an armchair to raise the height.

Odd about where to get aids etc - at the pre op session with the physios we took along a form on which was recorded measurements - height of bed, loo etc, and then give a prescription for aids which we took along to a shop which provided them all free.

Best of luck tomorrow, Mishap.
(Just think, here in France a trip to the dentist is compulsory before surgery)....

Best of luck for tomorrow Mishap I hope all goes well and you are swiftly home again

Charleygirl Mon 22-Sept-14 10:07:10

All the very, very best for tomorrow. Great that you are first on the list, get it over and done with. Tell the anaesthetist that you puke post operatively and he may be able to sort that out pre op.

The pain following a hip replacement is nothing like after a knee replacement - I think that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck.

Mishap Mon 22-Sept-14 09:53:00

Op is tomorrow - gulp! If nothing else the anticipation is resulting in a good intestinal clear-out! I am first on the list so will get it over with quickly - let's hope the surgeon and the anaesthetist are awake!

I am dreading all the post-op pain and puking and can't wait for that bit to be over with.

Mishap...dentists do seem to be often in two minds about antibiotics ...
when teeth fall apart....have had this happen to me.
I always forget that the good old fashioned cure of a salt water rinse is excellent at keeping mouth infections at bay. I've got a bit of an erosion/low gum problem that can become the site of an infection from time to time. The dentist recommended an expensive gel to use when it flares up, but good old salt and water always does a better job. The hygienist always swears by it.
