Has anyone got a virus that last for weeks. Mine just won't go away. It has an upset tummy element to it?

FlicketyB Sat 13-Dec-14 16:45:59

crun.I am like you, I have never had flu, neither has anyone in my immediate family, including my, now deceased parents. I was at boarding school during the Asian flu epidemic in the late 1950s and DS and I were about the only people at school not to get it.

I have read that some people do have a natural immunity to flu, but how you can tell whether one is a member of this fortunate group I do not know.

flowers for you all. This time of year is busy and stressful which is not helpful when your ill. I hope you all recover. Sorry to be selfish but fingers crossed I don't get anything from you, snotty grandchildren or anyone else for that matter.tchwink

Thank you for good tips, will head back to docs on Monday. And yens will head to M & S or Iceland to purchase ready made stuff. Also going to invest in some really good thermal underwear. Failing all that perhaps I'll curl up and hibernate. Hope everyone's feeling better today.

Is any one else allergic to the flu jab.

I had it twice with no ill affects but last year my arm swelled up, itchy eyes, ears and throat. The docs say I can't have it again because I might go into anaphlactic (can't spell it) shock. :-(

Go back to docs! If it's a virus then antibiotics are no use anyway, but if you've developed a secondary infection then you need them. You've given it lots of time to settle on its own and it's not happening, so go back for proper examination/diagnosis/treatment plan. Oh, and get the family to bring a course each for dinner including the veg-that way you just have to cook the bird. Or head for Markies and buy everything prepared so you just have to pop it in the oven. Maybe not quite what you would like but it's the family being there that counts. I recall in the 60's my mother and grandmother having flu-she bought 8 Birds Eye frozen chicken dinners and a large trifle from the bakers for Xmas lunch!

Thistledoo Persuade each family to bring a course with them. Job done.

Thistledoo Fri 12-Dec-14 12:17:37

So sorry for everyone feeling crook, but let me tel you, I have had a flipping virus for the past 6 weeks, one course of antibiotics seemed to clear everything up but low and behold it came back with vengeance 24 hours after finishing the course. Chest sounds like a load of broken bottles, no energy at all, just feeling cranky. Thinking of cancelling Christmas. I haven't bothered to return to docs, as there is so much being said about the over prescribing of antibiotics. Having the whole family for Christmas Day lunch and I m dreading it. Any suggestions?

Sorry annod!! It's probably just a nasty rumour!! I'm felled myself with a coughing type virus but being asthmatic I've ended up on steroids and preventative antibiotics. Not so good as I can't afford to be laid up for too long at this time of year. Own fault to an extent for running myself down with panto etc.

A couple of years ago my husband had proper flu (not man flu). He is horrible when he is ill and I remember waking him up and asking him to take an aspirin and drink a pint of water. I expected abuse but he meekly did as he was told but doesn't remember anything about it.

I had had a flu jab and did not catch his flu.

This year we both caught a coughing bug from our gs and just can't seem to get rid of it.

Anya Thu 11-Dec-14 22:26:08

If you'd ever had real 'flu you would be on no doubt about it. I had 'flu in 1968 and I lost a week of my life I remember nothing about.

Re this latest bug it's been doing the rounds here. All my 'children' their spouses and their children and my OH fell prey to it in November. The children recovered quickly but the adults are still coughing and wheezing. Somehow I've managed to stay bug free - so far.

Thanks, Katek! I'm about half way through the 100 days and the sinus ache keeps coming back on me.

Katek Thu 11-Dec-14 22:12:19

It's rumoured here that it's called the 100 day virus as it's taking that amount of time for it to completely settle c

ninathenana Thu 11-Dec-14 17:09:13

Thank you Falcon

Falconbird Thu 11-Dec-14 13:42:39

Hi Ninathenana,

I do hope he makes a full recovery.

ninathenana Thu 11-Dec-14 12:46:08

DD's friend had a chest infection which 2wks in has caused vomiting. He was told by out of hours doc he had a virus. He continued to vomit for 36hrs. Should have been admitted then as he is type 1 diabetic and has ended up in hospital very poorly as they can't stabilized him tchsad

DD and their other two friends have the virus too.

rubylady Thu 11-Dec-14 04:24:13

I've been off my feet with what my doc said was a chest infection, two lots of antibiotics but gave up smoking nearly eight weeks ago and I think it is all the bad stuff coming out as I've been really grotty this last week bringing phlegm up (sorry sad). Still got some to go and still coughing.

My brother has been ill with shingles/impetigo too so we've both been knocked off our feet and it's his birthday tomorrow, bless him. He'll be spending it alone as he's been told it's too infectious to go to work, he's a teacher, he's single and told his adult sons not to visit until he's better. So no celebrating for my dear old bruv. Yet, anyway.

Coolgran65 Wed 10-Dec-14 15:20:22

Just like Charleygirl - I had flu jab (and also pneumonia jab at the same time) with no obvious side effect.
Just like crum - don't think I've ever had the flu.

I'm a lucky lady.

crun Wed 10-Dec-14 14:44:22

I don't think I've ever had the flu. If I have, I don't know what all the fuss is about, if I haven't I've no idea whether I'm immune, or just lucky.

granjo39 Wed 10-Dec-14 14:25:41

Mine lasted nearly three weeks but it was the cough (not chesty) that accompanied it that laid me out, then another two weeks to recover from the tiredness.

Brendawymms Wed 10-Dec-14 14:13:45

My sister, an Avon representative, knows that a lot of her customer ladies have flu like problems at the moment. Her SIL has been ill for weeks with cold/flu.

Charleygirl Wed 10-Dec-14 12:01:19

I had my flu jab a few weeks ago and I maybe lucky but I did not have a single side effect. I intend to stay away from crowds for as many weeks as it takes.

Falconbird Wed 10-Dec-14 11:11:36

The joys of being a Gran or in my case Nan. When I did a lot of babysitting, I always had a cold or gastric upset. This particular virus really makes you feel low. Got another doc appointment as want to feel A1 for Christmas. First appt next Weds! You can check in as an emergency but I'm not an emergency.

annodomini Wed 10-Dec-14 11:10:14

I had what appeared to be a sinus infection but then seemed more likely to be a virus. Very painful and lasted for a good four weeks and I'm still snuffling after almost two months. Not flu and not connected to the jab which I had in September with no after-effects.

bubbly1960 Wed 10-Dec-14 10:24:41

In the last two weeks my daughter, her husband and their two children had the most horrific diarrhoea and vomiting bug. It also hit the in laws. I was with grandson when he went down with it, and I thought I was lucky and had missed it, but went down 9 days later. It was the worst D&V bug I have ever had!!! Still not right 8 days later, and I'm going back to visit them!

Falconbird Wed 10-Dec-14 10:20:55

That's a coincidence pompa because I'm in the process of trying to wean myself off a low dose of Diazapam. Went to doc about upset stomach and she said all seemed fine.
