Sorry this subject a tad touchy but I have had bad lower back pain since November Doc sent me for X-ray on back nothing. Take movicol daily up the dose to two satchels feel generally unwell, just come of antibiotics prescribed in case I had an infection from my diverticolitis. Any help would be most grateful

Is the movicol working or not? Some people take fybogel or something like that, which is quite gentle. you have to drink plenty of fluids with it though.
Also a high fibre diet can help things move along. If you have a touchy bowel don't go for "roughage" or bran, but instead focus on soft fruit (without pips or woody bits) and leafy veg.

I do think you should report back to your doctor. You have been given a treatment which is not working and you are still feeling unwell - your doctor needs to know that.

I believe movicol is a laxative - fybogel is a "stool softener" - not a medicine as such. So if you have not tried that it might be worth asking your doctor or pharmacist.

When I had been constipated for ten days following my recent op, in desperation I took a concentrated dose of Laxido.

Instead of three sachets a day I took eight sachets in three hours. This was suggested on the little leaflet which came with the medication for 'impaction'.

Worked.

Movicol is a softener too such it is and reasonably gentle. I think you should go to see a GP too or perhaps speak to a pharmacist. I know how painful and uncomfortable it can make you feel. Hope you feel better soon over

I can recommend leaving Lactulose as a last resort, it's disgusting stuff.

Dried apricots kept me 'going' after surgery.

I suggest you speak to your pharmacist who will be more aware of available medication, most if which will be available over the counter and without prescription. There should be a quiet and private area where you can discuss your health concerns. A pharmacist will likely be more knowledgeable about the side effects of your existing medication. Hope you can get this unpleasant symptom sorted soon.

Lactulose prescribed by the doctor works for me. I don't find it disgusting though it is sickly sweet. I also have sun dried apricots (no preservatives and a lovely flavour) or dried figs with cereal every day.

I find that putting my feet on a small footstool and coughing instead of straining helps a lot.
