Unholy alliances in private medicine

It would not surprise me at all that a consultant who works in a particular clinic should prefer that one to refer his patients to - that much is almost "reasonable" because he would know the conditions there, and it is at hand for him to keep in touch.

But to recommend expensive procedures for a kick-back, or invent reasons to refer patients - that needs monitoring somehow. (I don't know what is possible)

No, the article I am talking about is from 31st of Jan- and is entitled 'Medical corruption in th UK'- but probably came about after the Boston cases- stating it happens here too, and has been happening for a long time.

No specific clinics were mentioned, but I'd wager it involves all private clinics (can't say more than that ;) ...)

The case referred to seems to be in one hospital in Chicago, Granjura, unless the full article contains other references (I could only read a short version without buying a subscription)

Fair enough!

Does the above include BUPA?

Kick backs have been a fact of life in many countries- but it has come to light that this is increasingly common in the UK too. Many Consultants with a private practice will be provided with free consulting rooms, etc, in private clinics- so that they will refer back to said clinic for treatment and operations- and also, in some cases, push for the most invasive and expensive treatment in that clinic- rather than more conservative care.
The sums involved in kick backs, can be astromonical and include all sorts of other perks, free staff, but also holidays, and all sorts of payment in kind.

And of course some consultants intentionally keep their waiting lists as long as possible, and then encourage patients to go private to cut waiting time to zero, via... the above clinics of course.
