A friend of mine who lives in France has been prescribed Abufen for hot flushes and so far it has been very successful. Has anyone heard or had any experience of this drug? It doesn't seem to be available in this country.

On googling this just appears to be a painkiller. Of course so early I may have googled the wrong thing tbublush

I would guess by the name Abufen is just another NSAID. It's outs easy to get some of these names confused.

Strange perhaps her GP is giving it as a placebo - depends really what she said her main symptoms were- women do say they get aches and pains during the menopause. Not as they say ' the drug of choice' here.

according to this it's paracetamol

Sounds like a French thing, to prescribe it for menopausal symptons. A new idea.

Those typos are due to typing on a tablet with a tiny font without putting my glasses on first.
It's not just Paracetamol. That's a combination of Paracetamol Caffeine and Ibruprofen. If one drug dunna get you the other one might.

There might well be a particular benefit to that combination.

Talking of which, did you know that antibiotics are available over the counter in pharmacies in Spain? Someone told me, so as I was in Spain a couple of weeks ago I decided to try it. Tha pharmacist seemed to understand me and I am now the owner of 30 Amoxicilin. Not sure what I am going to do with them, but if I get another chest infection they might be useful.
Sorry to veer off subject a bit.....

The paracetamol and ibuprofen will help the pain and inflammation, the caffeine will give you a lift and more go. I don't see how any of them have any effect on the hormone imbalance that is causing menopausal symptoms.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 03-Apr-15 18:13:30

It might be enough to sooth the symptoms. Obviously couldn't treat the cause.

nelliemoser I vaguely wondered what those pluses were all about. You read it more carefully than me. hmm

(The hmm was referring to me)

It's Abufène and it's nothing to do with ibuprofen.

anneey Fri 03-Apr-15 19:24:33

On the subject of Ibuprofen.
My G.P. advised me that as we get older, anti inflammatory drugs arent recommended on a regular basis, as they are not good for the kidneys.
Pity because they are helpful.

Peaches I see now. The first poster thought it was Abufen which could easily have been thought of as the English version of the French sounding Abufene.
(Can't do french accents on the "e".)
It is a bit worrying to me that There are two very different drugs with such similar names.

I wouldn't worry Nellie as most of us haven't heard of either abufene or abufen, so neither is likely to be in demand in the UK.

Peaches you sound so authoritative on the subject - why not tell us more!

I just googled the spelling as posted so it is good it is cleared up, confusing though.

Hotmama Sat 04-Apr-15 14:18:30

Thanks ladies, it could of course be Abufene with an accent over the e. I'll ask Dr Google with that spelling. However, it seems that no one appears to know of it as a drug to help hot flushes.
You can also get antibiotics over the Internet, Henetha. I've got Trimethroprin for UTI's after having to go to A&E one night when I was in agony and passing blood. I didn't want to be in that situation again and so tried to buy them over the Internet and succeeded.

Ooohh. thanks, HotMama. I didn't know that. Could be useful. smile
