I am so fed up with this cough

It all started last July with a sinus/ear thing. I went deaf in one ear because of all the gunge and it never really cleared up. Cue winter and I start to suffer from my usual crop of coughs and colds and ended up with very nasty chest infection around the turn of the year. I've had antibiotics, steroids (they did work but can't stay on them for ever), increase in my asthma inhalers both preventer and reliever, steroid nasal spray and now I'm on meds which are meant to reduce allergic response. I'm still coughing. It's not as bad as it was but I'm still experiencing bouts of explosive, barking, uncontrollable coughing a couple of times a day whuch leave me shaky and tired out. I sound like a seal. I've had a chest X-ray which is all clear but I'm constantly at the doc. I'm now almost apologetic as I sidle in which is silly....it's not my fault it's not clearing up, but I'm starting to feel guilty about always being there. I don't want to do very much at the moment in case it starts the cough-dental hygienist on Wednesday is going to be fun. I'm getting very dispirited, I just don't know what to do

It wouldn't be so bad if they would only keep to a rhythm! I have given in and started to take herbal Nytol. Because what with my coughing and popping and DBH's snoring because he too has been suffering from yet another cold, it was all getting a bit much.

Oh janerowena those horrible popping noises. They almost drove me mad at night till I felt like screaming.

This is strange as we had a friend visit us a few days ago with the same thing and he had seen his GP twice over the last few months, but cannot shake the cough and feeling of chestiness etc.Even had two lots of antibiotics. It must be really wearing.

annodomini Thu 23-Apr-15 19:53:08

I finally saw the doctor today, because five months of various inflictions is more than enough. I managed some impressive wheezing when he listened to my chest and he has prescribed an antibiotic - the kind that leaves a nasty taste - well, I had that already! Hope everyone else is feeling better for the good weather this month. Wrap up well if, as they say, it is going to get colder at the weekend.

Thank you all for your kind words and support. I'm sorry to hear that so many of you are suffering as well, I hope that all of you start to feel better very soon. It has helped me to put my situation in perspective - was feeling quite alone with it all. I don't think my family appreciate how unwell and tired I feel - it's almost as if it's a mere nuisance that I shouid put to one side and just get on with things. Not much quarter given by them I'm afraid.

Persistent coughing is so wearing - you must be thoroughly exhausted Katek. I do hope that it will start to abate soon.

FlicketyB Thu 23-Apr-15 07:10:18

Katek, no consolation but my symptoms lasted for nearly a year. Like you I had a chest xray, steroid and other inhalers, antibiotics, the lot, without effect.

The only consolation is that finally it did clear and I have been remarkably healthy for the last five years since having it.

Have you tried the Vick Vapour Rub on the soles of your feet at night? It helped me a few years ago.

I'm getting quite despondent about it all. I keep hoping that different treatment/meds from my doctor will put an end to it , but nothing so far seems to have touched it. It's affecting my day to day life quite badly although I do try to keep going and carry on as normal. This works up to a point, but is leaving me exhausted by 9pm. I made myself go to a concert on Sunday with DH and had to ball up my jacket and use it to muffle the cough. I'm starting to feel as if I'm going to have this for ever or die from it. Not logical, I know, but my mood is being affected-hard to be cheery when you're coughing so much. I'm used to coughing/wheezing as I'm asthmatic but this isn't like an asthma cough at all. Not a good day today, I'm afraid.

janerowena Wed 22-Apr-15 22:11:59

Me too! Do you get a horrible popping noise? Awful!

annodomini Wed 22-Apr-15 22:08:26

Mine started in November with very painful sinusitis and just went on from there, through flu in January, chest infection, and now it's all got mixed up with tree pollen allergies - sinus pain, headache, cough and snuffle. sad

janerowena Wed 22-Apr-15 21:50:57

It feels all wrong, doesn't it. DBH's started back in early December, and he has only just finished. It's hard to tell where the cough ends and hayfever begins, for both of us.

The bug seemed to hit late this year - most of the family are usually well by this time of year. It seems weird to be coughing and hacking when the sun is shining.

Bellanonna Wed 22-Apr-15 18:50:53

I'm just on my fourth visit from this little bug who seems very attached to me. He/she or are they genderless? arrived just before Christmas spoiling many things I had planned. It came back in February, March and now again in April just as I am due to go on holiday. The hacking cough is wearing me out, even though it is loose at the moment. My GP said it wasn't whooping cough. She keeps this crystal ball thingy on her desk which she finds very useful. I've had enough!! I had actually started to trawl for information that would give me sinister reasons for this cough, and of course they were there aplenty, but was reassured that so many other gransnetters say they have/had it. It has admittedly affected my husband,my daughter and grandchildren too, so hopefully just a seasonal thing and I won't get it back in May. I love reading your comments - often very witty. Nice to have found gransnet.

I thought, this week, that I had finally put paid to this chesty cough/cold virus having had four whole days of feeling OK (still coughing but not so much) however, during the night I woke with a dreadful sore throat and streaming nose, coughing my heart up again!!! Had a chest x-ray last week and doctor said he would contact me if there was a need to. He hasn't done so, so should I assume all is well in that area? and that it is just something that will come and go until it is finally gone?

Mishap Wed 22-Apr-15 17:37:58

Glad to hear that some people are improving - as indeed am I - but it was a huge inconvenience at the dentist this afternoon. Not only could I not keep my mouth open for long, but the dentist and his sidekick were looking at me as though I had the plague!

janerowena Wed 22-Apr-15 17:34:08

Mine is getting better very slowly. At a pace slightly slower than that of a snail.

They can also be heart related.

vampirequeen Wed 22-Apr-15 09:15:06

Katek has had a chest xray and the rest of you with the cough should consider asking for one if your cough persists. There are lots of reasons why a cough persists and they need discounting. Last year DH had a silly nothing cough which turned into a persistent hacking cough. Turned out he had a partially collapsed lung.

FlicketyB Wed 22-Apr-15 09:06:45

Katek I had a similar problem about 5 years ago and although never satisfactorily diagnosed I thoroughly researched it and came to the conclusion it was whooping cough.

There is a midlands GP researching undiagnosed whooping cough in adults and his site was very useful. www.whoopingcough.net/symptoms.htm

Iam64 Wed 22-Apr-15 08:07:55

This thread hasn't brightened my day sadly grin

I've had over a week in bed with a horrible chest infection. The antibiotics are working though, the painful, hacking cough is easing and only woke me several times over night. So many people I know in RL and now here on gransnet coughing coughing and coughing some more. I've found steaming my head (lol) helps a bit.

TriciaF Tue 21-Apr-15 20:12:25

I had it on and off for about 4months, and asked my Dr. if it could be whooping cough. He said it was possible.
He gave me antihistamines and inhalants, eventually seems to have gone, fingers crossed.
Hope yours goes soon, Katek.

Katek Tue 21-Apr-15 10:13:34

Just been rooting about online and the symptoms of whooping cough do seem to fit. The problem seems to be getting a confirmed diagnosis. I can cope better with being unwell as long as I know what it is, I just hate not knowing and worrying myself to death about the 'what ifs', I may ask doc for blood test to see if there are any antibodies.

Mishap Tue 21-Apr-15 09:15:34

Suppressing the cough is not always a good idea - it has a positive function in bringing up the phlegm and preventing it from settling in chest/bronchi and becoming infected.

Katek Tue 21-Apr-15 08:56:58

I had wondered about whooping cough myself....it's certainly not like any cough I've ever had before and I've had plenty, being asthmatic. I did have it as a child but that was over 60 years ago! Wouid whooping cough last this long??
