My gorgeous dgs is a lovely lively little boy who has met his milestones. He was breastfed until at least 9 months possibly a good deal longer, and started weaning at around 7 months. He will eat just about any food he is offered. His diet has always been very healthy using organic food where possible and processed food does not appear on his food plan at all. Only drinks water or milk. Being careful not to encourage an obese child. Initially took some time before thriving properly. He is finely built and his paediatrition has suggested adding a little butter, cream etc to his diet. First teeth were slow which we understand bodes well for good strong teeth in the future.

My question is.... at 22 months his fontanelle is not yet closed and doctor is keeping an eye on this. Is this a major concern? Paediatric consultant is keeping an eye on it. This was just said in passing and not as a big concern.

Dr Google (yes, I should know better) says fontanelle should close between 9 and 18 months. And that being slow to close is a sign of.....dwarfism, downs syndrome... rickets.... And several serious conditions.

Does anyone else have a dc or dgc where the fontanelle was slow to close beyond 22 months, and this was considered normal. I don't want to ask of the parents and appear interfering or alarmist......keep mouth shtum and all that and keeping my googled thoughts to myself.

***said in passing by my ds, to me.
Not just said in passing by paediatrition.

I really wouldn't worry Coolgran if he's a thriving and lively child and the paediatrician isn't concerned. I'm sure that someone on here will have seen the same thing in their GC.

Yes I do know that I have heard of this in the dim and distant pass and if I remember it is not unusual, although I can understand your concern. However he will be monitored I am sure.

Premature babies sometimes take longer for the fontanelle to close, if the child is otherwise well I wouldn't worry too much.

I believe I recently heard of it being linked to rickets, but in this case it sounds very unlikely. I think if he continues to thrive you haven't got much to worry about. The consultant is aware of it so it's not going to get overlooked.

He drinks milk and has a good diet so most unlikely there is anything wrong

The age at which fontanelles close is a wide range from 9-26 months. No cause for alarm Coolgran65. smile
