I have just been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. Fasting bloods were 11.5. Do I need to drastically change my lifestyle? Prescribed Metformin twice daily. Know to keep active , but read conflicting advice on intake of carbohydrates ... ??

My advice is that it is not as bad as it sounds as long as you are sensible.
Iwas diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes around 8 years ago. I started off on Metformin and it suited me initially but then I found that it affectedaff my 'visits to the loo.' Sometimes, I wanted to go immediately after eating and that wasn't always convenient. My GP changed my medication to Gliclazide and the problem ceased.
Last year my Diabetic nurse tried to persuade me to go onto injections and I resisted because I didn't want to stick needles into myself. It seemed bad enough that I was testing via my finger pricks morning and night. Then purely by accident, I was in a place wher I could not get food for 8 hours and it frightened me (you must eat regularly) I was dropping to sleep. Upon returning home I saw my nurse and said I would try injections.
This was the best decision that I have made. The needles are so fine that I don't feel them going in and my health and eyesight seemed to improve. The only downisde is that I am putting weight on.
Now you have been diagnosed please have your eyes tested regularly and also your feet. Both are free services. I also keep active and swim 3 times weekly.
So it's not all bad news. Just be sensible and remember your diabetic nurse is there to help you.

Whoops! I should have answered you question about carbohydrates. My diabetic nurse made an appointment for me to see a dietician who advised me to cut out bread from my diet. The result was that my Fasting blood improved immediately. She also told me that jelly babies are good to have in your handbag if you start to feel a bit wobbly but only as a standby and not to eat a whole bag!

There is quite a lot of evidence that adopting a low carb diet can reduce the need for medication and even reverse the diabetes.
Good luck!

I have type 2 and am trying to control my carbs but ti's not as easy as it sounds - I have reduced my intake of bread, pasta potatoes & rice and only ever eat wholegrain versions - I think its working

Don't go taking tons of drugs. Fighting diabetes type 2 is quite simple - stop eating sugar based drinks and food. This means no more Coca Cola, sweets, candy, cake, white bread (basically everything based on white flour). Avoid all that and you'll surely drop to 5.5 level within a month. Good luck!
