Would you like to live for another 50 years?

I read in today's paper that a common drug that costs 10p a day may enable some people to live 50% longer. They will be starting trials on 70 and 80 year olds. Personally I would not want to live that much longer, would you?

Perhaps if I lived that much longer I might learn how to knit socks without gaining/ dropping stitches, mangling the heel turn and deforming the toe.

Only if in good health started late having family so grandchildren still little would love to see how they are as adults selfish really isn't it ?

whitewave Mon 30-Nov-15 15:23:12

Yes provided my health stands up. Watch the grandchildren and children.

fluttERBY123 Mon 30-Nov-15 15:19:16

Should really be Done this.

fluttERBY123 Mon 30-Nov-15 15:16:26

No. What for? Been here, done that.

angmhay Mon 30-Nov-15 15:15:57

No! Absolutely not!

annie61 Mon 30-Nov-15 15:04:23

Totally agree about the social chaos which would ensue.

Charleygirl Mon 30-Nov-15 14:57:07

diddy I could not agree more.

diddy Mon 30-Nov-15 14:42:51

Definitely not,,,I'm 70 now and think I don't want to live that long only to be dependant on other people to look after me.I am quite happy to live until I can't be independent any more

I would like to live for - in a decent condition - for another thirty years. (Hope saying that doesn't tempt fate. Will watch out for buses when I go out) Just to see my grandsons well settled in life.

nanaval Mon 30-Nov-15 13:27:49

Yes! Bring it on I say

narrowboatnan Mon 30-Nov-15 13:18:18

Blimey! They're moaning about the number of older people now - imagine the stretch on health and social care if we all lasted longer shock

We celebrated my Aunt's centenary this summer. She still lives alone with a little outside help, plays bridge 2x a week, does the daily crossword and is pretty healthy for her age but feels she has lived too long and would be quite happy not to wake up in the morning. I said it would be a good idea if she left a note on the doorstep if she intended to do that so not to give the carer a shock wink. I don't want to live to that age - it's hard work being old and I don't much like what is happening in the world either ......

Lona Mon 30-Nov-15 12:43:12

Not a chance, and anyway my money will run out. I'm planning to go at eighty, that's quite old enough for me!

Charleygirl Mon 30-Nov-15 12:35:29

Imagine sitting in a care home totally gaga for another 50 years? No thanks. The staff looking after whoever would be using Zimmer frames themselves.

Nelliemoser Mon 30-Nov-15 12:31:08

As I said earlier NO. I hadn't thought about the "can't afford it bit." I would not want the money to live on to run out before I do.
I think this idea is truly dreadful , it would cause total social chaos. We do not have enough younger people to fund our old age as it.

I would not think it would stop people dying of disease but just keep the already healthy from aging so fast.

Rosequartz I don't think there are many old Lewis or Morse episodes I have not seen.

Lizkat Mon 30-Nov-15 12:12:41

No I would not. I'm 68 and I've had a wonderful life. Now it is my children's turn. We have enough problems coping with an ageing population as it is. This idea can only make a very difficult situation worse.

helmacd Mon 30-Nov-15 11:43:35

Can't afford it!!

mollie Mon 30-Nov-15 11:19:35

Imagine what life outside your front door might be like over another 50 years...no thanks!

annsixty Mon 30-Nov-15 11:12:12

My mother just beat your SiL's gran by 1 month Gaggi and she was totally with it until the last week but not happy really and I wouldn't like to live that long. Although if all my contemporaries did that would be another matter.

Elegran Mon 30-Nov-15 11:08:36

Presumably they would also be living another 50 years? It could get rather crowded - and just imagine the Christmas present bill!

annodomini Mon 30-Nov-15 11:02:25

If I survived to 125, my DSs would be approaching the century mark and GD1 would be 73!

Gaggi3 Mon 30-Nov-15 10:56:34

Sil's Granny died recently at 101 and 7 months. She was sharp as a tack till the end and full of fun. O.K. if I could be like that, otherwise no thanks.

Grannycupcake Mon 30-Nov-15 10:37:47

It is easy to say you don't want to live that long. Not very many people would give you the date they wish to die.

friends123 Mon 30-Nov-15 10:32:24

An appropriate reminder from someone called John Wesley:"Live each day as it were your last"?
