Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Does anyone have any experience with this syndrome, a young relative of OH has this and although I've looked online for info there doesn't seem much about it. The young man in question had a serious injury to his hand/arm several years ago but he is so debilitated by his pain he can't work and is on serious pain relief permanently, he's had all the treatments the NHS can offer him and although he has a young family seems to be gradually withdrawing from all normal life (spends days in bed) and now has lost so much weight he looks skeletal. We aren't that close to him but know from family he has treatment for his depression etc and regular hospital visits but I really don't understand the weight loss and OH thinks his family actually fear for his life.. although they haven't voiced this to us.

I'm just trying to understand how it came to this with all the treatments available to him all from an injured arm (which has had many surgeries)... be glad of any ones views about this very sad situation.

cprs is caused when your body has an abnormal reaction to injury, you become super sensitive to touch and feel pain that is totally out of proportion to the cause; e.g. a pat on the backside can be felt as if you had walked in front of a car and this pain can last for days/weeks.

The cause is as yet unknown but it is usually associated after an injury. Some people find they benefit from C.B.T. and others from attending a pain clinic. Anti-depressants can also be of use in living with pain.

If you google Fibromyalgia there is a lot more info and although they are not the same conditions there has been more research into Fibro and it may help you understand. Also google the "Spoon Theory" this can give you an idea of how debilitating the condition can be and how hard it is to live with.

Hope this is of use
