Apologies if you have covered this before. Does anyone else feel dreadful in the lead up to full moon? I always feel tired, irritable, anxious and generally unwell, also am convinced we will end up bankrupt!

I find that too mamie. We have no street lighting and the bright light of a full moon does seem to make a difference to how well I sleep.

Mamie Fri 22-Jan-16 17:52:04

I definitely suffer from lunacy. I sleep badly and feel agitated and then realise that there is a full moon. We have no light pollution in our bit of Normandy and the moon feels hugely present.

My husband has always commented on the behaviour of people around and on the full moon. It was guaranteed that there would be an increase in crime at that time.

At last I've got an excuse!!!!

No Riverwalk not in the 'Ivory Tower', a bit closer to the ground she works in the community.

ffinnochio Fri 22-Jan-16 16:50:03

Does anyone else experience this?

ffinnochio Fri 22-Jan-16 16:47:27

I don't feel crabby, rather the reverse. A full moon brings on burst of energy that I remember happening just before my period; an overload of cleansing of stuff - chucking things out and re-defining the visual around the house. I enjoy it. Interestingly it always works and wonder why I don't do it at other times.
Perhaps a tad manic, but I get results. smile I've had a morning of it.

janeainsworth Fri 22-Jan-16 16:23:47

Tricia - Isn't that where the word lunatic comes from - the belief that people go beserk at the time of the full moon?

Riverwalk Fri 22-Jan-16 15:37:55

As I said Annie I'm interested in written evidence - has this psychiatrist you speak of published any papers on the subject, or could direct me to any?

As for the MH unit where they dread each full moon - all I can say is god help the patients - no wonder MH is the cinderella service of the NHS.

OlderNoWiser Fri 22-Jan-16 15:30:20

True for me - I used to wonder why I still get moody and miserable every month despite the fact that I am now past the menopause. Then I read something about the effect of the full moon on mood and it makes sense - I expect I must have been a werewolf in a former life ....

Before we opened our drop in centre for people with mental health problems we had to attend a course given by the mental health team, nurses, councillors, psychiatrists , it was a psychiatrist who spoke of the full moon effect

Riverwalk Fri 22-Jan-16 12:50:52

Juliette may I ask what's your daughter's role in MH - is she a psychiatrist?

Juliette Fri 22-Jan-16 12:41:34

DD worKs in mental health and would whole heartedly agree with Anniebach she and her colleagues dread a full moon.

Like you Nonna I love the moon, whatever quarter it is in, there is something very soothing about it, specially on a frosty night.

NonnaAnnie Fri 22-Jan-16 12:09:18

I love the full moon and find it calming, not sure what that says about me? We live near the sea and I just love to watch the moonlight dancing on the waves, it's beautiful.

Elssa21 Fri 22-Jan-16 11:59:17

(and grammatical errors!)

Elssa21 Fri 22-Jan-16 11:57:24

I can tell when it's full moon from people's driving!

Galen Fri 22-Jan-16 11:38:08

Look at the Birmingham moon murders

Teacher11 Fri 22-Jan-16 11:28:14

Well, that is where the word 'lunatic' came from.

PRINTMISS Fri 22-Jan-16 11:25:54

I am not sure about the mental health bit, but I know that whenever there is a full moon due, I will have restless/sleepless nights for a few days. I discovered this some time ago, when this started to happen, and after a while, because I was getting up in the night to make a drink, realised the moon was very bright, so began to take note. Happens quite regularly, as you would expect!

witchygran Fri 22-Jan-16 11:15:52

An ex partner, not an easy man anyway, used to lose his temper badly every so often. I kept a diary and after a while I realised that this always happened at the time of the full moon. I have read, more than once, that psychiatrists say there is definitely a connection. The link between the moon, tides and the composition of our bodies makes sense to me, from my experience.

Ditto

Of course every third full moon I do turn into a frog!?

TriciaF Fri 22-Jan-16 11:07:52

In the mid 60s we were in Singapore and I had a job which involved visiting a psychiatric hospital in Johore Bahru. The staff there used to say that at full moon many of the patients went beserk - those were the days before really effective drug treatment.
I seem to remember reading that many animals have an oestrous cycle linked to the full moon. Something to do with the extra light having an effect on some part of the brain.
Women's periods are sometimes called monthlies.

Riverwalk Fri 22-Jan-16 10:15:33

Annie I'm a nurse and we spout a lot of old superstitions - MH nurses are even worse grin

I'd like to read the evidence.
