washing intimate places

I cant remember if it was on gnet that I read about the correct way to wash the vagina. I read that you must never wash the inner labia only the outer. The inner has its own system of cleaning itself and can be affected by harsh soap/detergent. I had an argument today with a family member about how to wash this area and she washes the inner (bits) on her little girl, I have never believed in washing babies in that area unless they were soiled and only then with a damp tissue, not those scented baby wipes. So my question is, to settle the argument- do we wash the inner labia, women or babies or let it clean itself.

There's more than one way to skin a rabbit, as my grandmother used to say.

It has crossed my mind though that if old dears like us haven't mastered the art of personal hygiene there is something wrong. This should have been sorted at least teenager stageconfused

We all have to do something here!
I have solved some vaginal dryness by - wetting the toilet paper with water! and not drying after. Front first. Works for me and cleans too.

Well, not exactly up. Just........ Oh! Never mind!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 27-Jan-16 12:58:23

OMG! "Distasteful"?! There's been a lot worse than this on GN in the past. grin

Am I the only one that does under and up with the shower head? smile

Grannynise Wed 27-Jan-16 12:46:50

I suppose we can just avoid reading a thread if we consider it distasteful Tigger.

tigger Wed 27-Jan-16 12:35:33

Yes Maizid, just get on with it either a good slosh round in the bath or a squirt with the shower but do we really have to discuss such intimate details here, I find it quite distasteful.

Sadiesnan Wed 27-Jan-16 12:15:42

I use a bit of shower gel but mostly swish myself with water from shower head. I use moist toilet wipes for after number twos.

Couldnt find how to edit my post above.
Im not shocked by this discussion.
I think its very healthy to talk about personal things. Plus it could just help someone who is shy or naive reading about these topics.flowers

Same as teatime

I shower only ever using Johnsons Baby Wash in the pink bottle. I use it to wash all over plus my groin area and give it a good hand spray to rinse. I used Femfresh spray many years ago. Then I developed a Fibroid which led to a full "hysterical-rectum" as we called it in the office where I worked ! I often wondered if the was a connection.

I'm not shocked, but who'd have thought so many Gransnetters would be keen to share the details of their personal hygiene on here...? confused

MaizieD Wed 27-Jan-16 11:56:23

Are you as shock as I am by this conversation, tigger?

I've never given it a moment's thought.

tigger Wed 27-Jan-16 11:21:38

Is this what we have come to?

Lupatria Wed 27-Jan-16 11:12:16

i use femfresh wipes followed by a spray of femfresh and have done so for something like 40 years. i've had no after effects or ill effects either.

i "go commando" as knicker elastic aggravates a couple of scars in my groin area even several years after my op but i have a clean pair of trousers every day - don't wear skirts as i need to hide a couple of scars on my knee and shin.

i can't get into a bath owing to arthritis but i do shower - and always use the femfresh afterwards!! just like i use an underarm deodorant daily.

Right on, nanakate! Had a brief but explicit lecture from my gynaecologist that I was NEVER to use anything but plain water to wash my vulva, that he sees lots of problems caused by 'products' and they are there for the manufacturer's benefit, not ours. Retailers like us to think we stink so that we buy more. Cotton next to the crotch is important so that our bits can breathe, tights are not good.

Joelsnan Wed 27-Jan-16 10:31:42

I have the same problem as many with frequent bowel movements. I have recently bought a thingy that looks a bit like a bed pan that you can fill with warm water and put over the toilet bowl and sit in it...instant bidet. It is great and gives a lovely feeling of freshness without having to reshower.
Not much water is used either.

Joelsnan Wed 27-Jan-16 10:25:36

It's okay to wash the labia (outside bits), but do not douche the vagina (inner bit). Soap is often too harsh especially as we get older and things dry a little. For years I have used a mild wash called lactacid femina similar to femfresh, but it contains the same good bacteria that is naturally produced in the vagina. I get it from Boots, it lasts ages and I do wash daily smile I have no post menopausal dryness, whether this is down to luck or the Lactacid Femina wash, I don't know, but will keep using.
Ps, I was a midwife many years ago.

nanakate Wed 27-Jan-16 10:24:54

Bidets rock downtoearth! I love mine.

nanakate Wed 27-Jan-16 10:24:04

I wouldn't wash the inside of my mouth with soap and so I wouldn't wash the inside of my other parts with soap either.

downtoearth Wed 27-Jan-16 07:52:06

I would love a bidet ?
