Waiting for test results

I've had cancer and I have blood tests for tumour markers every six months. I have to have these for the rest of my life. There's no five years, so you'll be alright, for me.

I'm waiting now and it's getting to me. I feel a bit sorry for myself.

Thank you, polly and Alea. He's a bit calmer today and it has been sunny so we have felt more cheerful.

It is the waiting and imagining the worst which is torture, isn't it?
Fingers crossed for you - all may yet be well.

Sorry to hear that NotToOld flowers

We're back on the waiting game. DH had a blood test yesterday and today the surgery called to say his PSA count is high again and he must re-test in 4 weeks. He's now very anxious indeed and the thought of waiting more than four weeks to find out if the count has gone down is horrible. If it has not gone down he will be sent off to the hospital for the mapping procedure, which he dreads.

I have tests every six months and it's quite stressful. It will go to yearly eventually but it's for the rest of my life. At least there is a test for me, some are not so lucky.

Thanks for all the nice posts everyone. flowers

Great news polly I too am terrified of results but I do the bowel test and have my mammograms etc because I know it's the right thing to do. I did the bowel test this year and thankfully it was fine, although I was worried. I am a glass half empty person I'm afraid. DH went through prostate cancer without fear and with the attitude that he was going to be OK. Thankfully he is (so far) smile

I'm really pleased for you pollyparrot. I think you need a treat now, maybe chocolate or a glass of wine - or both!

pollyparrot Tue 29-Mar-16 15:59:42

All results back now, it took 4 weeks, no evidence of disease. I'm doing the happy dance.

Tegan If you don't do the bowel test you will worry that maybe you have missed the chance to detect something in time to remove it and save it killing you!

Do the bally test, girl. It has been sent so you can rule out bowel cancer, not sent so that you will get it! Don't die of ignorance or superstition - its not worth it!

NotTooOld Thu 17-Mar-16 17:31:48

harrigran - Yes, they do explain that in the letter and they also tell you what other signs to look out for. It's a very good service, I think, even though there is the worrying waiting time to go through.
Tegan - do the test!
nigglynellie - My DH also gets tested regularly as his PSA count tends to be high. I don't know who gets most worried - him or me.

My DH has to have a blood test every six months for prostate cancer. At Xmas the result indicated a recurrence after five years. Two blood tests later we are seeing a consultant in April, with a view to locating this blip and knocking it on the head. We are staying positive, but, it can get a bit wearing, and at times gets us down. But, he's alive, and hopefully treatable, and for that we're very grateful. Warmest good wishes to everyone on here.flowers

I'm a fully paid up member of the 'worried well society' and am a wreck every time I do one of the health checks. Currently not doing the bowel cancer one that came through the post the other day as I know that I'll spend 3 weeks worrying myself sick waiting for the result. I'm such a coward. I wish their was another way to get test results other than waiting for the postman.

POGS Thu 17-Mar-16 12:25:37

Polly

It is a worrying time for you and all I can say is another well wisher here. flowers

harrigran Thu 17-Mar-16 11:56:44

I can empathise polly, I was having daily blood tests but now they are weekly. I would consider 6 monthly testing as a positive thing and a very small price to pay for peace of mind.
NotTooOld I had the bowel screening, negative result but I already had bowel cancer. Not wanting to scare people but do not let these tests lull you into a false sense of security, if you have any worrying symptoms get it checked.

downtoearth Thu 17-Mar-16 08:46:36

It must be bad enough having had cancer in the first place, but the suspense of waiting is cruel, how I wish that the results of all the tests came back straightaway,I am not very good at waiting for blood test results and mammogram/bowel cancer screening and find my self holding my breath each time ......enjoy your retail therapy Polly you deserve a treat and try and take your mind off it for a few hours flowers
