Worried about DGS aged 4

They were staying with us for 5 days during which time he was unwell. He has gone home now - not far away - and he is still the same. He has no temperature, no diarrhoea, no rash, no general viral malaise - but he is vomiting every day. This started a couple of days before he came to us, so it has been over a week now. He appears perfectly well and is running about and hungry, then he suddenly starts to groan and cry and is sick. Then he falls asleep and continues to be unwell until the next morning when he wakes up as jolly as can be. You think he is better but the come that afternoon the whole cycle starts again.

He was in hospital overnight on Saturday as he was in such distress they feared he might have an intussusception; but the paediatrician came in and said he did not think it was and sent him home.

My DD is trying to get an appointment with the doc for tomorrow.

Has anyone else ever had a child doing this? - he seems perfectly well in the mornings, then everything goes downhill again. He has lost a lot of weight.

Not sure - it always came immediately before the vomiting; and then often went on for several hours afterwards. he was howling in pain and he is usually a tough little fellow. Boy did he worry us!

Is the pain megawind do you think a bit like babies get?

I've got everything crossed Luckygirl the poor little boy has had such a horrible time I do hope he's on the mend now.

Luckygirl Sun 10-Apr-16 19:57:17

Yes - I used to do that a bit.

But this was not at all like a normal tummy bug - it has been rather strange and he has been in so much pain. Hopefully it is all behind him now.

That is good news Luckygirl. When DC had tummy bugs I always starved them for 48 hours, clear fluids only. When I tell the young ones now they think it is cruel to deny the tots food but it does work.

Really hoping this is all over sunshine

Jalima Sun 10-Apr-16 18:47:33

Fingers crossed he is on the mend.

Perhaps having nothing to eat yesterday has starved the bug and it is going.

When DD had a horrible vomiting bug when she was much younger than your DGS she lost a lot of weight very rapidly but soon regained it when she started eating again.

Glad you have some better news today, luckygirl

whitewave Sun 10-Apr-16 18:45:18

Fingers crossed that tomorrow will be good news and he is definitely on the mend. Kids eh! How many extra white hairs have you got lucky

I've been thinking about you and your grandson today and am so pleased that he seems to be getting better. Fingers crossed that he will soon be 100% fit again.

Luckygirl I only discovered your thread yesterday, but was so sad to read about your DGS. I am so glad that he is having a better day - poor boy, he has been through so much as have all of you. Let's hope his mum's instinct is right and he is on his way to being better now. xx

So glad for your grandson and family, hoping he continues to improve. You must all be (cautiously) so relieved. x

Just had a call from my DD and the wee man has got to 5 pm without vomiting! - that is incredible progress and she says, that although he is a very thin, there is a bit of a sparkle in his eye that has been missing for ages and she thinks he may have turned a corner. We don't want to speak too soon as there has been a pattern of being OK for several hours and then relapsing in a big way. But she says that her mother's instinct feels that he is heading in the right direction at last. I've got everything crossed.

They are so hard to read aren't they? - he was worse than ever yesterday and felt too weak to get out of bed and wanted nothing to eat - so we thought he was going downhill. But, it seems that this is what he needed and maybe now he can start to pick up.

Thank you for letting me share my anxieties - it really helps. I have brought up 3 children and have never seen a child looking so ill - and mine had some ghastly bugs in their time.

Luckygirl I do hope there is some good news soon. Poor little chap.

10 days is a bit long for a tummy bug to be still active, surely. If your OH is worried, it might be better to persist. Can OH speak with someone and use his knowledge and experience to get this taken seriously?

So worrying for you all. The poor little lad is very young to be left in this state of health without more being done for him.

How far away is Birmingham hospital?
I would be tempted to take him there if there is a next time[I dont know how medical systems work nowadays].

Not very satisfactory in my opinion but you have to hope they were right and he starts to respond to treatment.

Alima Sat 09-Apr-16 20:27:08

Do hope he is better very soon.

thatbags Sat 09-Apr-16 20:23:33

That is one hell of a bug! I really hope he starts to get better tonight! flowers

Greyduster Sat 09-Apr-16 20:01:50

Keeping everything crossed for your GS luckygirl. Hope they now get to the bottom of what's upsetting him. ?

Luckygirl Sat 09-Apr-16 19:56:23

They have sent him home again - they think it is a "bug." God, I hope that they are right. He is such a poorly little lad. None of mine ever looked the least like this with a bug, nor did they lose all this weight. Fingers crossed.

Heart goes out to you luckygirl you must be beside yourself with worry and stress. Sending warmest wishes to you all flowers

Luckygirl Sat 09-Apr-16 19:05:47

Yes - I am like a cat on hot bricks waiting for the phone to ring. We have no idea what is happening.

annsixty Sat 09-Apr-16 18:59:55

How distressing for you all. I hope an answer is found that can be dealt with immediately and he won't be sent home yet again. We are so vulnerable around our C and GC.
