Lower back pain

About 3 weeks a go it started and then went after a session of acupuncture, but it's back again and I need advice on what helped you please.

I am reasonably fit and walk every day and attend one Keep Fit class a week, but I obviously need to do more to keep my back supple. Any suggestions please ?

Definately keep moving.

A physiotherapist once told me that the simplest back injury takes 2 weeks to heal, so hopefully it will be just patience

A lot depends on where the pain is. If it is radiating down your leg, this is sciatica, when you exert yourself you need a mixture of exercise and rest.

Unless you are certain that the pain is muscular, you should get medical advice. There can be various reasons for low back pain, such as kidney problems.

I really think a visit to your GP is necessary. Back trouble can be very complicated or just something that will go away by itself. I don't want to alarm you but three years ago I had horrendous back pain which turned out to be the worst thing I could have imagined. For your own peace of mind and reassurance your GP should be your first stop to get a diagnosis and also relief.

Thanks for the advice I will book an appointment with the doc.

My GP said my back pain was arthritis and that I should lose some weight. I lost about a stone with weight watchers and if I don't overdo things it's mostly okay now.

Could it be posture problems? How you stand, sit at a desk etc?

Went to Keep Fit today and my back has loosened up a lot.smile

I have a support cushion Obieone and make sure that I do not slouch.

I have had persistent lower back pain now since I had THR some 2 1/2 years ago. It's just there all the time. Sitting down and standing up (including, of course, the loo!)) is uncomfortable at best, v painful at worst. Turning over in bed is painful too.
An X-Ray has revealed arthritis predictably so I take minimal painkillers and do my back exercises which I incorporate into my keep fit classes twice a week. All joints are painful from time to time, completely unpredictable. I just grit my teeth and try to carry on.

Newquay this may sound a very odd question to ask but since your THR are both of your legs the same length? You may, without noticing have changed the way that you walk if there is inequality in length which could be causing the low back pain. It may be minimal (difference in length) but is worth thinking about.

How interesting Charleygirl. After surgery they definitely felt different but (lovely) surgeon said he had measured them carefully and it would settle down and he's right. At one of my choirs there's a retired physio and, as I walked in one night ages ago, he said I wasn't walking properly and he sorted me out.
I wonder, perhaps, if they weren't level before and now are? Lol!

A bit late in the day I'm paying more attention to my 'core'. I've had back problems most of my life....3 classic episodes of slipped discs that have put me totally out of action. Nowadays I am pretty much free from major problems and with the help of a great trainer am improving my core strength and flexibility. This time last year I felt very old and creaky and was often popping paracetamol and ibrubrofen and muttering about an achy back, but now I do a regular regime of exercises that have been gentle and effective. I was pretty sceptical at first as trips to physio had not really done that much to help, but because the trainer really knows what he's doing and is watching my every move,I have confidence in him and have gently pushed myself to feel a lot fitter and stronger - its honestly never too late as at 60 I am definitely not his oldest client!

NanKate. Your doctor may suggest you see a physio, or you could see one privately. I've found that the exercises have a surprising effect very soon, as long as I get into a regular routine of doing them of course. I hope things go well for you. ?

Thanks Elrel I am open to any suggestions. My back is a whole lot better than last week. The discomfort is fading however I will still follow it up.

Thanks for all your suggestions. flowers
