Keeping cool at night.....the best solution ever.

My old dog doesn't like summer and the heat much, so last vet visit I treated him to a cool mat that he could lie on and, obviously, stay cool. But he refused to lie on it hmm so I'm miffed as it cost £20 and I'm thinking 'what a waste of money'.

A couple of nights ago, tossing and turning and trying to keep cool had one of those 'ah ha' moments you sometimes get when half asleep. Unearthed the cool.mat from its box, and put it between the bottom sheet and duvet at the end of the bed.

Instant bliss. Cool feet. That feeling you get on a hot summer day when you stand in the grandchildren's paddling pool. The perfect solution.

@Mulu52 for restless legs, try raising the foot end of the bed. It worked for me.

There is a sort of doggy towelling dressing gown which you wring out in cold water and tie round. Have forgotten make, but Google will know

Permission for everyone to laugh ........ right, on the rare nights that it is too hot for comfortable sleeping, I take a Coldwater bottle to bet with me. Yes the hotwater bottle in reverse !! It works.

wrap yourself in a sheet?

I have a "Chillow pillow. It sounds like the cool pad for the dog. There are loads available on Amazon or eBay. It's very soothing and you can position it anywhere you need it.

I took my duvet off the bed weeks ago, just use the cover. When it is very hot I have a large freeze block (the sort you use in cool boxes) which I keep in freezer, when needed I put it inside a zip lock bag and wrap in a towel. Sleep with it on my pillow.
My OH still has a winter duvet, and when I used to sleep in the same bed we were always battling to either get rid of duvet or keep it on. Another good thing about having my own bed, no sleeping next to a furnace lol.

Always a northern girl and I have had a 4.5 tog duvet on for weeks now. I never have more than 10 and that only for about 3 months. I am throwing it off several times a night but I do like the feeling of a light cover so it gets yanked back.

I remove the the duvet out of the cover and sleep under that, I keep a throw at the end in case my feet get cold. I keep a good distance from H because he could double as an electric fire.

I won't need that mat - I live on top of a moor in Scotland and I've NEVER been too hot in 66 years! lol. My American friends talk about the high cost of their "air" and I tell them all I need to do is open a front window and open a back window and voila - AIR lol

You could always try filling a hot water bottle with crushed ice before spending on a cool mat.

I find that living in a 350 year old 'mud hut' helps!! For those that don't understand, the walls are cob, which is clay, straw and grit, filled into a timber frame, and a thatched roof.

I'm a northern girl, hypothermic, consequently always cold! My husband is the polar (!) opposite to me in everything, he likes a cold bed, flaps the duvet which drives me mad, he likes heavy bedding on top though which I can't stand. He also snores like a train, need I say more? We are in separate bedrooms across the hall and I can STILL hear him!

Charleygirl Tue 28-Jun-16 10:27:54

I only decided last night that I can possibly do without my hot water bottle for a few weeks but I did have my cat snuggled up to me. Even after a shower I am still cold when I first get into bed and it is few hours before I feel comfortable. My ex was the opposite and was always flapping the duvet, causing a draught at my side of the bed.

Bellanonna Tue 28-Jun-16 10:24:43

X post with you, Madmartha. Glad I'm not the only one. It was cold, wasn't it!!

Bellanonna Tue 28-Jun-16 10:23:41

Charleygirl I keep the same duvet all year round too, plus last night I had a hot water bottle! I blame that on being hypothyroid though.

Madmartha Tue 28-Jun-16 10:21:38

I had a hot water bottle last night, my feet were freezing. I'm an honorary northerner

Fan AND earplugs! Solution!

I do sleep naked; I was young once and have never caught up ?. However, nakedness doesn't equate to nighttime coolth, I spend humid nights fighting with my 4 tog duvet and turning the pillow 40 times a night. Add to that the fact that SW London is on the flightpath to Heathrow and you get an idea of my summer insomnia. I'm going to try one of those cooling things, thanks for the advice.

Charleygirl Tue 28-Jun-16 10:05:29

I am like Lilyflower always cold. My 15 tog duvet stays on my bed all year round and on the odd occasion it is hot, I lie without the duvet for a few minutes. a 1 tog duvet- I would be suffering from hypothermia.

Anya Tue 28-Jun-16 10:05:24

Or the Amazon delivery man knocks on the door as he did at 7.00am this morning?

Anya Tue 28-Jun-16 10:02:39

Just can't sleep naked. What if there's a burglar, or a fire or the sky falls in or a flood?

grandMattie Tue 28-Jun-16 09:55:13

of course - unless you want to dive into the shower in your nightclothes grin

Anya Tue 28-Jun-16 09:52:46

Chillow? Mines a Scrufts Cool Mat blush .... I'd have thought men's underpants in that range might have cooled their ardour wink.

Thanks for that tip grandMattie but forgive me if I don't crawl into bed wet....and would that be naked too confused

Lilyflower Tue 28-Jun-16 09:51:57

I am always freezing cold. I cannot imagine what it would be like to have to buy something to cool oneself down!
