I live in Ghana.
Friday of last week my daughter and grandson artived for a week's visit. saturday we had a quiet day at home. Sunday we ventured out for a simple walk round the block. I managed to get my leg stuck down a narrow dirty naily hole in a concrete grating, scratching and cutting my leg on the inside and outside of the knee area quite badly.
Various locals appeared on the scene offering to cut the concrete away, against my yells of 'no, wait!' Eventually, millimetre by millimetre, I managed to extract it, and hobbled home helped by dd and dgs, went to my local clinic where a nurse cleaned and dressed the wound and a doc prescribed preventive antibiotics (dalacyn). Next day the three of us went to the beach, which was ridden with sandflies.
Next day, Tuesday, I went to get the dressing changed, and mentioned to the doc on duty that I was a bit rashy and itchy and suspected the beach. He prescribed an antihistamine tab and cream, and dd and dgs and I headed north into the jungle for a couple of days, the rash spread voraciously into every nook and cranny it could find. I eventually twigged that it must be a reaction to the antibiotic and this was confirmed by the small print. Called the clinic, and stopped the antibiotic.
Came home a couple of days later (three days ago, and was prescribed massive doses of cortisone tabs and cream, still as itchy and rashy as ever, inside and out. Was a bit annoyed that I had to self-diagnose and the clinic didn't puck up the link.
Anyone ever suffered like this? I guess it's nothing compared with what some people suffer, but I can't think if anything else, find it hard to sleep, and am seeing little improvement...the rash just moves from one place to another!
My dad, 92, a doctor living in Rome, confirms that the dics here are following the right steps and have done what they can, I'm just lucky I didn't get one of those horrible allergic shocks that stop you breathing! Guess I just have to be patient!
