Ooh, thank you everybody. I'll definitely look on YouTube - good idea that - and see how I get on.

Definitely, sign up. Hatha yoga is gentle and I expect the instructor knows a lot about the way our bodies work, or in our case, don't work quite as well as they used to do.
I started yoga 18 months ago, after a 20 year gap in classes. I have RA and osteo so I I'm nothing like as flexible as I'd like to be. Our class has 8 women over 65 and the instructor is so patient and helpful. Go for it NotTooOld, I'm sure it will help on many levels.

Yes, try it , it has helped my flexibility enormously. A good yoga teacher will not expect you to do anything that hurts and will offer alternatives to suit different abilities. As others have said inform the teacher about your hip and knee.

Yes, definitely sign up. You won't regret it, yoga is always done to each individuals limit, you're never in competition with any one else in the class and a good teacher/instructor will be able to give you any necessary alternative exercises

Yes, go. Tell the yoga teacher about your problems and she will make sure you won't do anything that is unsuitable for you. Have fun.

I used to go to a hatha yoga class and one disabled lady used to sit on a chair and just do as much as she could.
I had to stop when I had plantar fasciitis but am much better now so using a dvd.

Have a look on youtube and give it a go in the privacy of your own home.

In yoga, you are never pushed to do anything that doesn't feel right.

Yes yes yes! The teacher should be able to show you a different way to do an asana if you are unable to do the way she shows. I have an arthritic knee which will not bend much, so cannot do any kneeling back on heels or sit cross legged so I just sit with my legs straight out in front of me when others sit cross legged. There are only a couple of things I cannot do and then I just watch what the others do. Everybody's body is different and we all do the best for our own body. Yoga is great and you may become more flexible as you go - just take it gently!
PS. To get up from sitting on the floor, I usually turn over onto hands and knees and then lever myself up!
Have fun and enjoy the classes.

Yes do. I used to go to hatha yoga classes. They start off really gently and slowly. There were several older ladies there, one of them was fitter than me (in my 20's then), and could stand on her head.?

There's a new class starting in our village. The ad says it is ok to be a beginner and I'm tempted to go along but I'm 72 and although relatively fit and healthy I do have a replacement right hip and a slightly dodgy left knee. I'm also not very flexible and would struggle a bit to get down on the floor, also up! Should I sign up?
