I only ever got measles, which affected my eyesight. I was with other kids who had the other childhood ailments but I didn't catch them (even my MUM caught mumps, but I didn't).
Most kids would have to stay in bed when they got these illnesses. You would be visited by the doctor and be given tonic to strengthen you.
You would stay in bed until you felt better and be given your meals on a tray and then you would have a week or so downstairs, eating light meals to see how you coped.
I feel sorry for the kids these days. They stay home for a day or two and then packed off back to school asap so that Mum can go back to work. I have seen kids being dragged along to school to collect older children, still covered in spots! My Mum used to get the lad next door to collect my sister when I was ill.
Even doctors treat these illnesses as nothing but I remember feeling really ill when I had measles and my sister's whooping cough used to scare the life out of me, she used to go purple.
