It's day 6 now of the wheezy chesty cough and I'm trying most of the above, thank you all. Been googling also and it does seem like I've got Bronchitis. I didn't realise that it doesn't need anti-biotics unless there's an infection. I always thought Bronchitis WAS an infection, well you live and learn ladies. Teetime you are so right about inhaling steam, it does give some relief, Mumsy I like the sound of Simple linctus, NotTooOld, not sure about the chopped onion but it's worth a try, but Grandma60 I really like the sound of Picklecombe Nuggets and I have a reward card for H & B so will definitely get some. Meanwhile the wheeze goes on. Think I might have to resort to the Anne of Green Gables remedy - Ipecacuana and a room full of steam!!

I know they are only boiled sweets but Picklecombe House Manuka Honey Nuggets (from a well known high street health food chain) work for me. They are good to take out with you for when it wouldn't be easy to take medicine.

Buttercup also make 'broncho-stop' cough pastilles. They contain thyme herb extract and worked very well for me recently. I got them in Morrisons.

If that doesn't work you could try my mothers's remedy. Chop an onion and sprinkle brown sugar over. Leave until a liqid is formed and then enjoy it from a teaspoon. We used to love it as kids and it worked.

Our GP always recommends honey and lemon.

Buttercup Syrup is available at most chemists, supermarkets and health food shops

Well I got up this morning and the wheeze was much better but unfortunately it was short lived. At least the cough is what my Mother used to call 'loose'. As far as cough meds go I tend to stick to Robitussin as I am pre-diabetic (Type 2) and it's sugar free. May be a bit of a waste of time when I'm having 3 spoons of honey in a lemon drink though! Buttercup syrup is alive and well in the UK (£4.99 at Boots) but I don't think it's actually made from buttercups! Think I must have been really low as I've had 2 colds in 4 weeks, one after the other but I've never had such an awful wheezy cough before, I'm literally rattling. I just need to feel well enough to get my flu jab. Lovely to hear all these remedies though, please keep them coming.

Not heard of Buttercup syrup before, guess it would be important to have right qualities. Buttercups are poison to equines, so is it like other herbal remedies which if taken in a raw form are poison?

I don't get coughs either but I had to laugh about rubbing Vick on YOUR feet curing your husband's cough!

I think an old German housewives recipe is boiling up onion skins and drinking the infusion. That may be for colds, though. Definitely the honey to sooth the throat.

I've never heard of buttercup syrup - was it really made of buttercups.

And now I can't stop repeating to myself "Hoarse, horse? - Suck a Zube"

I agree with shysal Corvonia works a treat and it tastes divine!

Barley sugar works a treat

Mumsy Fri 14-Oct-16 10:53:12

If I ever have a cough I take Covonia Night Time liquid. It gives me a good night's sleep. They do a Day Time version also.

Thing is take orally just goes down to your stomach and doesn't stay in the throat very long and obviously doesn't hit the lungs at all. When I was a chest ward sister we still encouraged hot steam inhalations - putting something in is just nice and smelly doesn't really have any other therapeutic effect. Some foods are thought to be 'mucus forming'- cheese, milk dairy products- I would be careful about excluding them though as they are a great source of calcium .

Thank you all, I tried the Vick on feet and it even cured my husband's cough! Also the spoonful of honey (feel like Mary Poppins). Will keep in mind adding ginger to honey and lemon, never heard that one before. Anyway I am less wheezy this morning ladies so thank you all once again.

Hot lemonade.
A spoonful of honey very last thing at night. Let it rest a back of the throat
I leave the honey and spoon at bedside
Prop yourself up on plenty of pillows
In the morning vitamin C tablets
And cup of lemon and ginger tea.
Ginger added to salad, stir fry etc.
Chicken broth

Hope you feel better soon tiffaney

Vicks on the feet and then bed socks.

tanith Thu 13-Oct-16 18:18:45

Codeine Linctus will calm it if its a tickly non productive cough.

Badenkate Thu 13-Oct-16 18:10:48

Thankfully, I never have a chesty cough - although I have plenty of room for it wink

wot Thu 13-Oct-16 18:07:40

Pholcodiene is quite effective for a tickly cough.

tiffaney Thu 13-Oct-16 18:05:02

Here's an easy one. What do all you Grans out there take for a wheezy chesty cough? I have two inhalers, am taking chesty cough meds, honey and lemon and alternately Beechams hot drinks. Only thing I can't have is Whisky (and I hate garlic). I have seen a Nurse Practitioner who assures me I don't have an infection but to 'go back if it gets worse!'.
