Mercury also in tooth fillings...

Ginny42 Wed 26-Oct-16 01:07:06

Re mercury in the vaccine, see the NHS website
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/vaccine-ingredients.aspx

Under the heading: Thiomersal (mercury) in vaccines it states that

Thiomersal is a preservative that contains small amounts of mercury. It's used to prevent the growth of bacteria or fungi in the vaccine.

Some vaccines also contain aluminium.

Don't be so sure Sillyoldfool I had 'real 'flu' and lost a week of my life. Yes it was awful. I had the 'flu jab and my reaction was not 'peanuts' I was ill for two whole months with fever, sweating, exhaustion, rashes....couldn't do anything, go anywhere, if I got out of bed I was sick and dizzy.

It is probably karma as I used to tell other people they couldn't possibly have such a reaction, and trivialise their experience. I know better now. There's just too much anecdotal evidence for all this to be coincidence, but of course it cannot be investigated by double blind trials, so it must be our imagination?

It's a bit like saying 'I cross the road every day and I've never been knocked over yet!' And yet people are....

I have had mine. I am pretty sure anyone who has had real flu would have a flu jab, any reaction to the jab is peanuts compared to flu, it is not a trivial illness. Husband pays for his, I am old enough for a freely

The year in question we were given the swine flu jab in addition to the regular one, Bluebelle although I think DH either had a "special" one or have it at a different time because of being on immunosuppressants. No way we would have trusted to luck in his case.

Jane10 Tue 25-Oct-16 07:02:35

Swine flu is covered according to the leaflet I was given when I got my jab.

BlueBelle Tue 25-Oct-16 06:58:50

I don't think swine flu is covered by your annual jab daphneboon as it's a totally different strain You were probably just lucky you did nt all get it
Colds are not helped by the flu jab they are different

BlueBelle Tue 25-Oct-16 06:53:51

So what's a pneumococcal jab I was told by the nurse I had had a pneumonia jab

I didn't use my chemist as I didn't want the money to go from my surgery into corporate hands

Auntieflo Mon 24-Oct-16 14:21:09

I had my Flu jab ! this morning. But it wasn't a jab ! I looked away and was expecting the sting, which never came. I wonder how she did that? I felt nothing. I was also asked whether I had had the pneumococcal vaccine. I said that I have had the pneumonia jab, and was told, " no you haven't' , there isn't one. ? as there are so many strains of pneumonia. Anyway, what I evidently had was the pneumoccocal one. At the moment I am fine, no sore arm, and hope it continues so.

I had a flu jab 4 weeks ago at my local chemist. Unlike previous years the injection really hurt, I think the pharmacist thought I was being a wimp. I am now unable to lift my arm into certain positions and it is very painful - it would seem he jabbed a nerve. According to an article I googled this is rare, but becoming more frequent as the flu jabs are becoming more widely available at different places. Haven't been to Docs as they are in competition with the local chemist and will probably say I should have used their service. Wonder if anyone has had this happen?

Jane10 Mon 24-Oct-16 13:09:31

Nevertheless its still worth getting the jab!

Daphne the problem with 'flu is that it is not a single illness like diptheria it is a virus that mutates and changes over time. The vaccine is a "best guess" about which strains will be active in any year. There is no vaccine for a cold because over 250 variations of the cold virus are in circulation. So you may think your flu vaccine protects you but it may not. The argument about wiping it out like diptheria is unfounded. In fact there is some evidence that the virus is mutating more rapidly.

Have only had flu once in my life and wouldn't wish it on anyone! Was still working full time then and had gone to a school carol concert the week before Christmas and it started while I was there with a cough. And so it went on and on, one secondary infection after another. I eventually went back to work in February!! And I've always considered myself a strong person when it comes to illness!
Get it done!!

DaphneBroon Mon 24-Oct-16 08:27:33

Isn't the point of vaccination also to restrict the spread of a virus in the community not just for yourself. We vaccinated our children to stop potential childhood "killers" such as diphtheria, measles, rubella polio, whooping cough etc.
So if there is an appropriate immunisation available and on offer, is it not selfish to say "Oh we don't get flu in our family" .
Years ago SIL got swine flu which would have meant DH (compromised immune system) and I would not have seen our new grandson on his first Christmas if we had not had our flu jabs. DD was covered by her pregnancy jab and DGS by being fully breastfed. It could have been a fraught household otherwise!

4i43 having a 'flu jab won't stop colds hmm completely different virus,

Esspee Mon 24-Oct-16 03:08:19

My grandmother died of flu. Had mine already.

smayed Mon 24-Oct-16 02:07:49

I've been having the flu jab for four years and never had any ill effects, I had the pneumonia jab three years ago and was fine.

Luckygirl Sun 23-Oct-16 23:21:24

Our practice has a flu party with cakes and tea.

Mistyfluff8 Sun 23-Oct-16 23:12:49

Been having my flu jab since I turned 60 before that I worked with pregnant women who all year long had colds etc ..Never had any problems with it and have it done because I am still working with babies .The only trouble is it was really impossible to book a flu jab at our local doctors so I had it done in Boots no problem .Certain supermarkets charge just £5 .

4i43 Sun 23-Oct-16 22:28:25

I think everyone who is eligible for a flu jab should have one. Had mine 3 weeks ago, & no bad reactions what so ever. I haven't had a heavy cold for 10 years , which was when I first began having the jab.

Leticia Sun 23-Oct-16 22:27:33

I am not having one. I think my immune system is pretty good. I don't like the list of ingredients. My mother is 92 and has never had one, she has just turned it down this year. My husband has one every year.

Penstemmon Sun 23-Oct-16 22:06:58

My DH and I once had flu. We were so ill..it was b4 mobile phones. We sweated and slept in the same disgusting pit of a bed for about 7 days, hardly speaking crawling to the bathroom and living on water until we had the energy to get up. I ended up with bronchitis which lasted for weeks. Since then (early 70s!) we have not had flu..seriously nasty colds but not flu.
We now have flu jabs and I had a pneumonia jab 2 yrs ago due to having a chronic condition that jeopardises my ability to fight infections.

aggie Sun 23-Oct-16 22:01:12

I thought I had Flu before , till I finally succumbed ! I had to lie downstairs on the sofa , I couldn't even crawl up the stairs !

Jane10 Sun 23-Oct-16 21:51:04

Then it'll be too late thebeeb! Its not a matter of 'being prone to it'. Its a nasty infection that goes around. The fingers crossed method won't save you.

Thebeeb Sun 23-Oct-16 21:36:36

No. Touch wood so far I haven't been prone to flu so will leave alone until I find it a problem.
