Knee replacement heresy!

As people may know I had a total knee replacement four weeks ago. I had a lot of help and support from people on this forum for which I'm very grateful. Due to my enforced inactivity I've been hitting the internet always looking for useful info to help my recovery. In the course of this I checked the evidence base for physiotherapy. I was pretty horrified to discover that no long term benefit had been identified for physio for TKR. Further enquiry led me to the Bonesmart forum. This is a forum for people who have actually had joint replacements. I was very interested to hear all sorts of myths busted around physio. It certainly explains why my knee is so much worse for days after physio. Looks like my physio is doing everything that doesn't actually help at all and could lead to tendonitis! Very scary.
However, the message seems to be that recovery will happen, it will take time and, actually there is just no substitute for rest, ice and elevation. As to exercise - activities of everyday living will do the trick but don't try to force it.
As an ex NHS person this was heresy for me but reading about such direct practical experience was very comforting. Not sure if I've the nerve to cancel my next appt though!

Well I have said before my physio was almost nonexistent and I have done just fine. I do the stretching still but that is it.
Does anyone else find that this cold weather affects the joint though?. I am about 16 weeks post op but this week my knee is very stiff and I can't walk as far as I could a few weeks ago.

I agree annsixty. My knee seems sort of achy in the cold damp weather. I can now understand why older people like to move to warmer climates in the winter.

I need to go and look for your original thread as DH was due to go in on 19th Dec for his knee replacement (work refused him the time off so has had to cancel and wait for new appointment, the MD said of course we can't say you can't have your op but we consider Dec to be impractical for the business to be without you. But then he was approached by another Manager on Friday and told all unused holidays to be taken before end of Dec so they can do without him for holidays in Dec but not for an op, luckily the MD had agreed to honour the holidays he had saved to have the op when he get new date. But can't see them agreeing to a suitable date) so the thread will hopefully be helpful for some tips.

Poor chap. He'll need a lot longer than just typical holidays to recover. Do check the thread I started in October but also check the Bonesmart forum. Feel free to ask away here too.

Yes he had wanted op to be as close to Christmas so he saved hols and Christmas hols and then to sign sick, he is able to work from home so seemed the sensible time to have op hmm. Will look at threads thanks
