It started Tuesday I coughed so much I'm in pain now every time I cough around my ribs. I feel washed out due to little sleep and the sickness. Generally I try to fight on but this time I've just sunk on the sofa. Wondering which is the best way forward to aid recovery.

Oh come on jacksmum surely you knew that Anya is our resident expert and authority on everything!

Nelliemoser Sat 04-Feb-17 23:40:06

I had that in early November. I still have the odd coughing session in the day but nothing like it was. It was only about Christmas when it started to improve.
In the early stages I was sitting up at night inhaling steam and barely able to get my breath with a dreadful sticky mucus,

jacksmum Sat 04-Feb-17 22:36:26

Oh wow i am fairly new here and to be told that "jacksmum that Manuka honey wouldn't do any good in this instance (don't these smug types with their mythical cures get right up your nose?) , has shocked me
I use Manuka Honey and so do many others that i know ,and it really helps , but i will "hush my mouth" and not comment anymore , sorry for any upset i caused by my comment i was just trying to offer advice .

I felt off my food for a few weeks. I've lost 1/2 stone

Is anyone else feeling queezy with this I am. Unusual for me. Something else to add to the list along with diarrhoea.

merlotgran Sat 28-Jan-17 11:36:45

Thank you everybody for your good wishes. DH is actually getting over it faster than I am so I was treated to breakfast in bed this morning. I have jelly legs today so it was very welcome.

I have found Jakemans throat and chest sweets the best so far. They don't seem to leave an aftertaste and are very soothing.

All the old remedies have also been a godsend - Vick on the chest at night or inhaled over a bowl of hot water.

Bugger off, cough....I've had enough!!

Anya Sat 28-Jan-17 09:05:16

Apologies to jacksmum that was a bit harsh of me.

Badenkate Sat 28-Jan-17 08:57:24

Sorry to hear so many of you have been so ill. I hope you'll all be over this horrible cough/cold soon - hurry up the warmer weather. Merlotgran I hope your DH is on the mend by now, how worrying for you.

Anya Sat 28-Jan-17 08:57:14

No police Auntieflo wink ?

Auntieflo Sat 28-Jan-17 08:50:07

Merlotgran, so sorry to hear about your DH. Hope he is getting better, and that further tests don't reveal any hidden nasties.
Aren't our emergency services wonderful! A couple of weeks ago I was ill during the night, a fire engine turned up as first responders, then the paramedics, then the ambulance crew.

Anya Sat 28-Jan-17 08:39:49

I started a thread about this particular virus in December having come down with it in November. I assure you jacksmum that Manuka honey wouldn't do any good in this instance (don't these smug types with their mythical cures get right up your nose?)

Hope your DH is on the road to recovery merlot.

Even the queen's been laid up with it. I think Bronchostop pastille are similar to the Potters ones I recommended eased coughing spasms. All you can do is treat the symptoms and hope your immune system fights the infection.

Marmight Sat 28-Jan-17 08:24:33

Merlot flowers. Hope your DH is soon well again. Great that he received such good and immediate treatment from the NHS

Marmight Sat 28-Jan-17 08:22:42

I was at a concert last night where many in the audience were coughing and spluttering. In the interval I chatted to the lady next to me who had a terrible coughing attack during the first piece. She said the only remedy which helped was Bronchostop pastilles from Boots. Maybe worth a try? So far I have avoided The Cough. Fingers crossed after last night ? ?

Hope all goes well, merlot - really worrying for you both.
tanith, thanks for the advice - if it happens again, I'll do that. smile

cornergran Fri 27-Jan-17 22:57:11

Wishing you both well, merlot, your husband has had more than the cough, an exhausting time.

merlotgran Fri 27-Jan-17 22:51:57

Thanks, phoenix. I must say it was a bit of a shock but we're hoping the tests will show it's nothing too serious.

The paramedics did an ECG which was OK but further blood tests showed there was something amiss.

I was so impressed with the quick response. We live in the middle of nowhere. DD lives next door so I dashed around getting dressed etc., then grabbed a torch so I could nip up the path and wake her as her phone was going straight to voicemail but when I opened the back door the first responder was already there!!

When I thanked him he said, 'Oh this is a doddle. I normally get calls like this in the rush hour!'

jacksmum Fri 27-Jan-17 22:24:47

I take Manuka honey whenever i feel unwell, over the past few years it has cleared up any colds i have had ,x

phoenix Fri 27-Jan-17 22:07:39

Sending every good wish for you and your DH, merlot

We've had a horrible two weeks. DH is just home from hospital having had the cough which developed into an athsma attack. I had to ring 111 during the early hours of last Friday. He developed chest pains so they sent an ambulance. It was all very quick and before I knew it we were told he'd also had a small heart attack. shock

I was going down with the cold/cough myself so struggled a bit with the hour long journeys to and fro the hospital for a week and the worry of how serious DH's heart problem might be.

He's back home now but obviously has to return for further tests. He's a lot better but I'm at the hacking stage of the cough so no let up just yet.

Roll on summer!!

cornergran Fri 27-Jan-17 21:15:05

It came the first week in December, it hasn't left yet but is letting go just a bit, sometimes I feel like a human being. Soothing drinks helped, anything to suck and keepmthenthroat lunricated, as did sleeping propped up and trying to keep in an even temperature. Just today I am coughing so much less, there is hope smile. I think all anyone can do is sit it out, miserable virus that it is, unless underlying health conditions or worrying symptoms indicate it best to see a doctor. Don't put yourself at risk.

tanith Fri 27-Jan-17 20:35:27

Marelli when I had cracked ribs I had to cough as I go a chest infection because I wasn't breathing properly she advised me to hug a pillow to my chest when coughing it really helped.

Marelli Fri 27-Jan-17 20:16:18

We've been just the same for about a fortnight. I pulled a muscle just under my breast and found the only way to cough was to bend right over and hold on to my side! Neither of us have had a decent night's sleep for ages (even tried separate rooms) and it's very wearying.
We've discovered that Fisherman's Friend lozenges help a bit!

Elrel Fri 27-Jan-17 20:07:26

Feel a bit better to know that I'm in good company! Violent choking unproductive cough on top of a sniffly cold. Getting up in the night with problem I'd rather not mention. Taking cough mixture and throat sweets which happened to be in the house, haven't been out for days. I'm also having occasional teaspoons of honey and plenty of water and other drinks. I'm already on paracetamol because of recent knee joint replacement.
I suppose I should be glad that, ironically, this started just as I was getting back to fairly normal sleep after the knee discomfort. Huge sympathy to everyone else who has this nasty cough, hoping we all get rid of it soon!

whitewave Fri 27-Jan-17 19:32:10

Had lunch with a friend yesterday, she started it before Christmas and yesterday was her first day outshock she looked proper poorly too, but apparently feeling much better - blimey!!!!

Auntieflo Fri 27-Jan-17 19:25:59

So many people are suffering from this cough that goes on and on. I started just before Christmas. DH has had it since October, and his is now abating. Our DIL visited and added her germs to the mix. My cough is beginning to ease off, but now I have a sore throat and my neck and throat glands are sore. We were supposed to be having a day in London tomorrow, but I just can't face it. We found that frequent honey, lemon and whisky, hot toddies, were soothing and helpful. Hot Ribena is good too. Hope all who are suffering feel better soon.
