Liver enzymes going up

I had a major health episode a couple of weeks ago - acute severe pain in stomach, fainted, vomited, spent several hours on a trolley in the corridor in A&E. I perked up a lot after pain relief.

I had my gall bladder removed in 1989 and since then I have had intermittent quite unpleasant pain that mimics how it was before the op - especially after eating. I avoid fat as far as is possible.

Bloods showed raised liver enzymes; repeat blood test showed they are "creeping up" and I have a further test booked for 2 weeks time; and am awaiting an ultrasound.

Just for the record, I am normal weight, a tee totaller and don't eat red meat, so all the things that I have googled relate to people who are overweight and eat a high fat diet and drink lots of alcohol.

Anyone else had anything like this? I am very keen to avoid a repeat of the debacle of a fortnight ago - it was not great!

BTW - it is amylase that is going up.

I have quite high toxins in my liver, in fact i asked the doc to check them when i went for my monthly blood test on Tuesday.
I have always had it, even when young, and it appears to run in my Fathers family, we also have an intolerance of Alcohol, I can only drink white wine,my Father was unable to drink any alcohol at all. A cousin died of untreated liver disease as the 'specialist' did not believe him when he told him he had never drunk alcohol.
I had a bad cold and was taking paracetamol and my levels rose really sharply.
I find if I eat very iron rich foods that affects the levels.

You could be describing what has happened to me Luckygirl including the fact that had my gallbladder out (in 1982).

Following several agonising episodes of severe pain which left me unable to breathe properly, sweating and gasping, I was diagnosed with gastritis after I had a gastroscopy, full ultrasound and several blood tests. I lost 2 stones in weight in 3 months as I could not eat - no appetite and was very fearful of triggering another attack. I lived on water, bananas and mashed potato. I was almost totally without energy and strength. My GP was ringing me at home to see how I was. My liver function tests were causing concern too.

I am pleased to say that I have gradually improved and this week I have felt my energy levels returning to normal and I am eating more widely without a return of the painful episodes.

I have an appointment with my GP at 2.30 pm today to see if I need another blood test to check my liver and if I can reduce the meds I have been taking for 3 months. (Omeprazole, ranitidine and advanced gaviscon).

Good luck and I hope you get the right diagnosis and treatment quickly. flowers

Thanks gaga - good to hear that things are settling down for you.

felice - it is interesting about the alcohol - the reason that I am teetotal is because I am highly intolerant of alcohol - the tiniest amount makes me sick.

Sorry to read about this Luckygirl, here's hoping the cause and cure can be identified.

Luckygirl, it means you are missing an enzyme and is actually quite common, a lot of people who complain about 'bad' stomachs after drinking just a couple of glasses of alcohol probably have the same condition.
I was chatting about it with a friend one day and she informed me that it was part of her PHD studies, she hopes to publish the results of her research next year.
