Juney I've heard good anecdotal evidence about sour cherry juice too. Not the sugar-laden stuff you buy in supermarkets, but the expensive variety, very concentrated from health shops. You are also advised not to exceed the stated dose.

Things heavy with yeast can make it worse, a small drink of apple cider vinegar, good quality, can break up the crystals that cause the pain, not a great taste but def does it for me

I had gout once a few years ago. It was agonising. A course of medication cleared it.
.It has never happened since - even though I eat marmite daily..

Marmite can cause a flare up of gout.

My husband has gout. It is an extremely painful condition. Any time he has lentils I can almost guarantee that an episode will start.

His has been going on for around six years about twice each year. A very quick remedy is super concentrate cherry juice. It isn't cheap and is available from health food stores but it does work. I buy this one for him..

He says the pain starts to go within 24 hours. Mr Google will give you lots of info on this.

Good luck ?I

Thanks ladies SiL has been given medication. I suppose a food diary might be helpful to see if there are any triggers.

It's not always easy to know what triggers gout. DH suffers, and whilst we know some foodstuffs which can trigger it, it doesn't always, i.e. tomatoes, seafood etc. He's had several painful bouts in the past which we've never been able to say what might have kicked them off. He has finally given in and now takes allopurinol daily and has not had a bout for a few years.

I'm not sure that diet alone will help/ relieve the pain-have you looked it up on NHS Choices? Its a very good site with evidence based information.

My SiL has just been diagnosed with gout. The purine levels in his blood are extremely high. My DD would like to help him manage the condition with diet, but he is a very fussy eater. I would be very grateful if anyone could recommend a recipe book to give her some ideas.
