From everyone's comments it sounds like I need to get back to the GP. I've started seeing a different one in the practice so hopefully she will be more helpful. Plus I have a better idea about things I should be asking. I will see what my options are for physio too.

Hi Penygirl. I dont think there is anything you can take in supplements to improve hip pain. I have taken turmeric, Krill Oil for three years but cant say it helped me. Finally had x.Ray. As a result I am having a Hip Replacement on Tuesday after being told I should have done something much earlier. So would get an x ray organised if I were you.
Not looking forward to it, but several of the Gransneters have said what a difference it has made to their life.

When my hip started to get worse the pain was more in the groin at first. I went to the doctor and was amazed when he said my hip was the problem.
Good idea to see a physio though.

Your GP's verdict was unhelpful. What on earth does it mean to say your hips were what he would expect from someone your age. Mine sent me to a physio to confirm what she thought which was that the pain was and the physio's verdict was that it really was my hip. So, if you can be referred to a NHS physio or see one privately, that's what I recommend. They usually know more than GPs about joints and muscles.

I was going to say the same Charleygirl. Best to get it checked out.

There is a very slim chance that it could be coming from your lower back.

Thanks everyone. GP sent me for an X-ray about a year ago but said my hips were what he would expect for someone my age! I'm trying to lose weight and improve my fitness but it's a struggle when it hurts.
DH is on the waiting list for a hip replacement. He is in constant pain and does a very good impression of the Hunchback of Norte Dame - that's why I'm trying to sort myself out before I get like him!

The best thing I've done is improve my overall fitness. The better your muscles are the more supported the joints are.

Get checked out by your GP. I suffered for years because I thought the pain would just go away. If you have to have a hip replacement its a relatively straight forward op now. I was 56 when I had both mine replaced and to be able to walk with no pain was so wonderful.

If you have an Arthritic hip then its all downhill. Have you seen your GP to get it diagnosed? I speak as one who just had their 2nd hip replacement ?
