Can any GNetters help please. My DH has developed a terrible taste in his mouth after eating. He visited his GP who said it was 'probably thrush' and that it would clear up. DH has now had this for over a month and no sign of it going. He says its a waste of time going back to GP! Dentist says its not gums or teeth related. Any one got advice please?

When I was using Sensodyne toothpaste every day I often had a strange taste in my mouth after eating. It puzzled me for yonks. Then for some reason that I forget I changed to a Colgate toothpaste and haven't had the odd taste problem since I did that.

This can happen if you eat a lot of pesto. Look on google for 'pine mouth'

I'm surprised your DH's GP didn't give him some medication if he/she suspected it was thrush. Thrush doesn't always just clear up on its own. I think he should go back to his GP.

This happened to a colleague and he was eventually diagnosed with having a cyst in his jaw, from an unerupted wisdom tooth. I assume your husband has had dental x-rays? My colleague complained for months about a "foul taste in his mouth" and this sounds similar.

He hasn't eaten pine nuts recently has he? My DH developed a dreadful taste in his mouth. GP tracked.it to pine nuts. Apparently it is a very common occurrence.

Thrush needs anti fungal treatment and does not go away on it's own! Look inside DH mouth - usually thrush has a whitish coating over tongue, inside of mouth. This needs a prescription from GP or minor ailments pharmacist.

I'd advise him to see a dentist and have an xray done to make sure it's not a dental issue. I had an awful taste in my mouth, it was there on and off for a few weeks then seemed to go of it's own accord. A couple of months later I began to have occasional toothache in the same area so mentioned it at my regular check up. The dentist did an xray and told me a tooth was cracked and wanted to extract it asap. She said the bad taste was caused by an abscess which had cleared up on it's own and I was very lucky not to have experienced excruciating pain. When she took the tooth out it was cracked right down to the root and smelt dreadful, I think I had a lucky escape!

I had this symptom with H Pylori. My only other symptom was heartburn with some acid reflux.

If it is thrush eating plain natural yogourt usually helps.

My husband once had this after taking a very large strength antibiotic for stomach ulcers.

If it doesnt then GP should prescribe something. Hope it is resolved quickly for him.

He should see a dentist.

He already has, kitty.

I would have said stomatitis, which can follow taking anti-biotics. However it is more of an unpleasant feeling in the mouth rather than a taste. I haven't had either so can't judge.

You could add it to your list of things to look into/ask the doctor about, though.

Thank you everyone for taking time to make suggestion. DH has not eaten Pine nuts and has also had dental -rays which drew a blank. He went back to his GP who has now prescribed a course of antibiotics but said 'they really won't get rid of it!" Will also try natural yogurt and my sister has suggested some anti reflux medication even though he is not having burning symptoms perhaps this is affecting his mouth? Thank you all again.

It could be silent reflux where you don't get any burning sensation, but you'd think his GP would show a bit more interest...confused

When I got thrush during treatment I found it helpful to gargle with salt or bi carb in water several times a day

I had a horrible taste in my mouth for a very long time, almost a year after a sinus infection, saw 3 different Drs, all gave me antibiotics,
After going for a 4th time,i was given antibiotics plus a steroid spray,it did the trick, the last Dr said antibiotics are no good on their own
My taste was like a blocked up drain, foul
Couldnt believe only 1 out of 4 Drs got it right
Hope your husband gets it sorted out
