went for yearly, will be 60 in week.have had horrendous medical troubles.

was in accident.spent 8 months on striker frame and year in halo brace.while this was going on developed sepsis, small piece of pavement imbedded in leg decided to make me sick.

was put on IV antibiotics and had transfusions.
survived all of that..
1-2 ears after teeth started to split in half and break.

dental surgeon blamed on too much antibiotics..
had most teeth removed.still broken hearted, never even had a cavity.
Then i get diagnosed with hepititus C (probably blood transfusion)
30 years later, all is as well as can be.
occassional back pain, hep is gone ,teeth are still gone.

i was a search and rescue trainer,raised 4 babies,do yard/garden work.keep house up to par,plumbing electric etc.am unable to drive now.
Dh passed in november.
previous dh(who i have always stayed friends with)
comes by and gives me rides and helps out ingeneral.

went with me to doc appointment.
had new doc/old one had read my extensive file.
new one says after check up.
FOR YOUR AGE you are in pretty good shape.
(am not on meds of any kind.)

exdh starts laughing really laughing.
new doc asksconfused what?
exdh says"you dont know much about women do you?this is one of the toughest people of any sex, i have ever known.
read her medical records and you will only have half the story.
i changed doctors.
any one else still getting the "little women" or "for your age"crap?

Ana Tue 13-Jun-17 16:34:32

Wouldn't bother me if a doctor had said that to me. What's the problem if it's true?

Greyduster Tue 13-Jun-17 16:39:55

I have actually only had it said to me once and that by a radiographer who X-rayed when I ruptured the ligaments in my knee. He said, "Your joint is in very good shape for someone of your age! It should heal well". And it has. I am 70. I was flattered.

mimiro Tue 13-Jun-17 16:44:49

my age has nothing to do with my health

it was said in a very patronizing way.
oh and it was "for a woman of your age."
as opposed to what? a man my age?a dog, a tree.
age is a number not a health requirement.

Oh Doctors....am not in a good mood about the one I 'have' to see at our practice. I need my pessary ring thingy replaced every six months. It works like a dream....has liberated me and I can just forget my prolapse and do all sorts of stuff.
Everytime I see this darn woman she asks me drearily....'oh does it help at all?'....I get all enthusiastic and say yes...I can dance, take dog for a walk etc etc.....she replies in same dreary way....'oh.....well that's unusual'.
Hardly cheers one up. The previous Doctor I used to see....(now retired) is the one who literally picked me up, said 'oh we can fix that' and cheerfully introduced me to aforementioned pessary....she was a delight, really got me sorted and was always enthusiastic when I went for a refit!

MIMRO Can we compare ourselves to cars? Mine is thirteen years old, and although its a good make, BMW, it has recently failed its M.O.T due to mechanical parts just deteriorating/corroding ! I think our bodies may be similar...they just start to age and creak and generally begin to struggle a bit to keep going. You have gone through tremendous medical "events" in your life, and should be mighty proud of yourself for doing all the things you are able to do. However the doctor (youngish?) was probably trying to be amusing (NOT)...he was out of line. Good for you...you changed doctors. Good luck to you in the future.

I went to the doctor about heavy periods. He said,"It's your age Mrs X".
I was 35.angry
After that, we moved and my new doctor diagnosed and removed a malfunctioning coil; and all was well.

M0nica Tue 13-Jun-17 18:20:08

Like you annodomini I got the phrase young as well, about 45 in my case. I had a virus and then developed, what I now realise was, Post Viral Syndrome (PVS) because I returned to work far too early and soldiered on.

When I finally saw a doctor, with the usual symptoms, no energy, no stamina, constantly tired, he inquired about the state of my marriage, the state of our mortgage, and the state of our other finances and finally told me it was my age. However, he then signed me off for a week. The medically sanctioned weeks rest was all I needed. I went back to work fit and well.

If any doctor tried that on me now, I would take him out at the knees!

Stansgran Tue 13-Jun-17 18:51:37

I wish someone would sign me off for a week.

"grannysue"
thanks and
i am not saying i dont have problems.
arthritus is a constant reminder.
i just get tired of this mentality i have been encountering. that because
i have beeen around for 6 decades and am now a widow.
i should
dress in polyester(i wear levis and t shirts)dress appropriate to my age
dye my hair.(have a great clump of pure white on left side of"bangs"
not eat spicy hot food[confusion]
not be able to fix my computer when it dies
not be able to hook up audio equipment
not listen to rock and roll..
ex;was in carport rewiring exdh harley for him(new electrical system)
40ish neighbor came up and said"should you be doing that?
i asked "why because i am a woman?'
no because you are old and retired .aaaarrrrggghhh.
asked him if he knew how to do it.
"well no".blushed and left.

yes the machine is wearing out but i do what i can to slow the process.

most important thing i was ever told ;health wise
naturopath doc>after first bone injury(4 so far).
keep moving keep muscles healthy they willl help with bones that get fragile.
i dance ,do pilates and yoga.swim ,walk.bike and motorcycle ride.
i ache when i get up.cant afford artificial teeth so i cant eat the way i want to.and my eyes are going.
as a proponent of alternative medicine i do teas and use herbs in cooking that help keep me as healthy as i can be.
2nd dh said after 3 actual bad accidents/injuries" shes harder to kill than dracula."that,
i considered a compliment
sorry about the delay in answering'
had 3 power surges in a row and laptop died had to reinstall o.sgringrin

MIMIRO....You have such a fantastic attitude to life in general that I doubt there is much you can't tackle. Just keep fuming every so often and blow off some steam but you have come so far in your (difficult) life that nobody will stand in your way for long. Very best wishes to you, and long may you keep going with such fantastic determination. smile
