Flu jab

Hello everyone, this is my first post. My 34 year old niece had her first flu jab at the beginning of this month. She has just started working with very sick children and did not want to put them at risk. A week after the jab, she lost sensation throughout her body. She went into hospital, they ruled out GBS. The nerve tests were clear. She continues to have numbness in her legs and feet. Doctors say she just has to sit it out but as you can imagine we are all concerned. Just wondered if anyone may have heard of anything like this? Would appreciate your thoughts. Many thanks.

I don't have any advise but just wanted to say hi Glammy and welcome to GN. We had a discussion about the flu jab a couple of weeks ago but I don't believe anyone had this reaction. My husband and I had ours 3 weeks ago and have been fine. At least the doctors don't seem too concerned but it must be worrying for your niece and family. I hope she improves soon.

We are ok from this years flu jab Glammy as is our daughter who also had one.
Maybe just a coincidence, that your DD had the jab, then something else occurred?
Welcome to Gransnet anyway.?

Many years ago my sister had a very similar experience to the one you have described, although she had not had a flu jab. It puzzled the medics and when she was in hospital they did all sorts of tests before eventually she was diagnosed with a form of rheumatoid arthritis. We all thought the doctors were clutching at straws and although she used a wheelchair/crutches for almost a year it went as suddenly as it came. She believes it was cured by her drinking cider vinegar.
Probably not a very helpful anecdote, but maybe reassurance that your niece's illness is not necessarily connected to the flu jab.

Welcome Glammy
I too doubt it was caused by the flu jab there was a long thread about the flu jab and just about everyone said they had.no reaction of any kind ...also I think a week after is too long for a reaction anyway
Not sure what GBS is but it sounds as if she has cleared all tests if it’s gone from her whole body to legs and feet it sounds as if it’s wearing itself out ...fingers crossed

GBS stands for Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder in which a person's own immune system damages their nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. GBS can cause symptoms that usually last for a few weeks. Most people recover fully from GBS, but some people have long-term nerve damage.

Beware of making causal assumptions! There is no reason to suppose that the illness that has afflicted your niece has anything to do with the flu jab. Some people are very vulnerable if they get flu, so it is important that they are not deterred from having the jab.

I am sorry she has been unwell - but she does seem to have had all the right investigations and hopefully this will be self-limiting and she will be well soon. Let us hope so.

It does sound like GBS but there are different syndromes I think that present with similar symptoms. I think I have heard of this with the vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. It does sound vaccine related though.

Many things can cause GBS; about two-thirds of people who develop GBS symptoms do so several days or weeks after they have been sick with diarrhea or a respiratory illness. Infection with the bacterium Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most common risk factors for GBS. People also can develop GBS after having the flu or other infections (such as cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr virus). On very rare occasions, they may develop GBS in the days or weeks after getting a vaccination.

Thank you all so much for your warm welcome. And yes it is true we do not the cause, so cannot assume anything. Your advice and support has given me great strength, thank you again. I will keep you posted on her progress.
