Dental Implants

Yes one of mine had to be done in a place with little bone so the dentist used something to 'grow' more. I think I have 4 or 5 implants - I had a lot of problems with root abscesses and failed crowns/bridge. It took 9 months and many visits plus 2 sedations - the initial operation and another for more work plus I had to wear a small palate for most of that time. Cost £6k but the dentist (recommended by my own excellent NHS one) was amazing. I now have a strict cleaning regime and 3 monthly hygiene visits - my dentist says I'm a model patient but he doesn't have anyone else with as much dental work in their mouths

They can do bone grafts if you haven’t enough bone, my dentist who does lots of implants did explain it to me. It does bump up the cost even more , but fortunately I didn’t need it.

My friend had her front teeth replaced with implants in Budapest where it was much cheaper. The dentist has a surgery in London where you go for your first appointment but the surgery is done in Hungary.
I did consider having two implants but unfortunately I do not have enough bone in my mouth to support them.

I had an implant about 2 years ago. The only problem I had was a very rare allergy to the mouthwash I was advised to use for a week after the first minor surgery - and that has nothing to do with the procedures and all to do with my allergy problem. But apart from that no problem at all.

It is an expensive procedure.

I had an implant to replace a lower back tooth about six years ago. It took about half an hour and after local anaesthetic was painless although noisy. The dentist lent me his ipod and suggested I chose some loud music. He gave me a couple of paracetamol before I left and that was enough as the after pain was minimal. A post was inserted and then three months later the crown was attached. There were five appointments altogether, the last two being checks and I've never had any problems. I know three other people who have had implants and chose to have sedation so they snoozed throughout. They haven't had problems either and we all think it was worthwhile although hard on the purse!

I had an implant to replace a bridge / crown last year. The whole process took 6 months and cost a lot but well worth it and would do it again if necessary. The actual process wasn't the most pleasant experience, but plenty of pain relief and good follow up care. No problems since, went to a private dentist who had all the computerised gubbins. They did offer 0% credit to spread the cost.

There are a couple of threads on this somewhere already but I have had implants for 3 years now to replace bridge and other problems and had no issues - best thing I ever did but it's not cheap. Find a good dentist with a very good reputation too.
