An odd up chuck

The strangest thing happened last night. I ate out with work-mates. Had fish and chips with the best mushy peas I've ever tasted. All fine, except that, as usual, there was about twice as much as I wanted to eat. I'm thinking of starting a campaign to demand half portions!

Anyway, I was fine. MrBaggs came to collect me a little after nine when the very good but ridiculously loud bagpipe band started up (why do so few folk musicians who play in pubs and hotels know nothing about volume except TOO LOUD? and Let's Blot Out All Conversation And Make Them Only Listen To Us?)

So, came home, pottered a bit and made myself a cup of tea. After the cup of tea I felt a bit weird but thought I was just tired so went to bed. I couldn't sleep because something was wrong with my stomach. Eventually, at nearly one o'clock I rushed to the bathroom and threw up the cup of tea. So weird!!! ?

I'm fine this morning and thinking "What on earth...?!"

Many people respond similarly to bagpipes I believe! Personally I quite like them.

Hope that your instant recovery is maintained.

I did that with toast the other day. Then had a day of rushing to the loo and feeling weak and Wobbly, then fine.

My experience was weird - just out of the blue with no warning. Hope you don't have the same after events!

I cant eat fried fish the oil its cooked in always upsets my stomach...the tea may have laid on the later of oil in your tummy

AlieOxon Sun 26-Nov-17 11:43:43

I wish I could get a 50p bag of chips! Local chippery's minimum is about 4x what I can eat! so I don't buy chips.

You need to ask your doctor, Baggs.
Don't take any notice of what I say, but your story reminds me so much of my friend, who has been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.

MissAdventure Sun 26-Nov-17 11:52:52

That's exactly how my hiatus hernia came to light. It was a cheese and onion pasty that did for me!

kittylester Sun 26-Nov-17 12:01:10

My toast wasn't a hiatus hernia!

henetha Sun 26-Nov-17 14:40:59

Coincidence- that is exactly what happened to me the last time I had fish, chips and mushy peas in quite a posh pub near here. I assumed the fish had been "off". I've never experienced an "up-chuck" quite as severe as that one.

MissAdventure Sun 26-Nov-17 15:11:39

I think its the fat in the batter. And also in cheese and onion pasties, it seems. blush

glammanana Sun 26-Nov-17 15:42:45

The fatty batter on the fish & oil on the chips keeps it lower down in the stomach any milk in the tea would have curdled in your tummy hence you trowing it back.Hoping you are feeling better.

Baggs something similar happened to me a while ago (also after eating a fish meal, which was rich) and I came to the conclusion that my system can't cope with a mash-up of lots of different types of food e.g. a rich meal followed by a milky drink or eating chocolates. So I now enjoy the rich meal but only have water.

Is it something about our digestive system being "weaker" as we age? I remember my gran saying "Iike bananas but bananas don't like me any more" ...or something like that (I can't remember what food it was she was talking about).

I sometimes feel nauseous after eating rich food, but nothing that a ginger tea can't deal with.

Good that you're fine again.

kittylester Sun 26-Nov-17 16:06:35

I'd just like to point out that baggs isn't quite as old as some of us!grin

Elegran Sun 26-Nov-17 16:29:35

I had similar the other night, except it was a down-chuck, not an up-chuck. I woke at about 2.30 perfectly fine, but got up for a wee. It wasn't just a wee and I was glad I hadn't ignored it and stayed in bed. No pain, no cramps, just a sudden bout of diarrhea. Back to bed and no more trouble. I still don't know what caused it - maybe there is "something going around" Or maybe it was the finish-up-the-vegges soup, which had quite a lot of shredded cabbage in it. I don't use a lot of cabbage but had bought this one for variety.

Jalima1108 Sun 26-Nov-17 16:40:29

Have you got a cold as well Baggs?
There is a strange bug going around which seems like a head cold but then people are 'up-chucking' once or twice.

Do not worry if chip portions are too big. Just freeze them and the next time you fancy chips get a portion out, put them in a baking tray in a high temp oven for 10 minutes.

They are even better second time around. Some restaurants advertise Twice-cooked chips because they are so much better second time around.

kittylester Sun 26-Nov-17 20:29:09

I don't think double fried chips, or even the more common triple fried, are frozen between each bout of cooking.

Grannyknot Sun 26-Nov-17 21:58:14

"Twice cooked" means taking them out of the oil just before they are all done, draining on a kitchen towel and then popping them back in to hot oil to finish them off - infallible method for the best chips and the way I was taught by my mother. I'm too lazy to do that nowadays but frozen chips just don't cut it IMHO smile

Jalima1108 Sun 26-Nov-17 23:07:42

My DM always cooked chips that way.

Triple cooked chips are even better but I rarely eat them! I have only eaten them in a pub/restaurant.

M0nica Wed 29-Nov-17 21:40:18

We freeze excess chips, and get them out when we want some next time and reheat them in the oven. The result is the same wh.ether you twice cook in a day or three months

Thanks Baggs and Elegran I’m now feeling queasy.

NotTooOld Wed 29-Nov-17 23:40:55

Re portions that are too large, DH and I always buy just one portion of F&C at the chippy and share it. Even then we can't always manage all the chips. I've no idea how just one person could eat a whole portion.
