Gallstones and diet

Hi Daisy, I had gallstones a few years ago so have some idea of how difficult meals can be. I found that basically going as fat-free as possible helped, so not just avoiding the obviously fatty foods but also switching to skimmed milk and avoiding all fat and oil in cooking and serving food.

I also found that having an empty stomach made me feel very ill, so eating little and often helped. Instead of 3 meals a day I’d have something to eat every couple of hours or so, small meals with snacks of fruit, dry crackers, bread or low-cal soup in between. Jelly went down well too. Main meals would be usually be chicken, fish, eggs, with rice or plain mashed potatoes, or pasta. I was ok with gravy too - we use bistro granules. Sometimes all I wanted was the mashed potatoes and gravy....

The surgery was wonderful! I felt better as soon as I came round from the anaesthetic. In fact, it was only then that I realised just how ill I’d been feeling before even when I thought I was feeling ok.

Hope these suggestions help, and maybe someone else will be able come up with some other ideas too.

Good luck to your DH with surgery, it’ll be a life-changer!

My DH has gallstones and is waiting for the operation to remove them. In the meantime, he's becoming afraid to eat, as everything he does try seems to bring on an attack of colic.

We're aware that fatty foods and things like cheese, chocolate and icecream aren't wise choices and also, foods containing soy but I'm needing inspiration.

Can any of you wise people give me some advice as to things that I can cook for him that are less likely to cause pain? In fact any useful ideas of things that might help would be very welcome.
