I have enquired of ladies on the forum previously but quite a long time since. I am having difficulty in finding holiday insurance for my husband. He is 66 and has one stent inserted, diabetic 2 and also an aneurysm. Is there anyone else with these problems who have been successful in obtaining insurance?

I have just had a quote for full insurance including health - but excluding anything that might be related to my epigastric pain followed by collapse episodes. It is a 10 day holiday in Switzerland and the insurance cost is £74. Seems a lot, but it was the only company that would take me on at all, and the broker rang around all yesterday afternoon.

chelseababy, the extra money I mentioned is the membership of NFOP. It goes from April annually. I am an HSBC pensioner and they kicked me out of my travel insurance when I was 70!!

I looked at the NFOP and it seems you can join even if only on state pension. Insurance is £195 single or £275 couple worldwide.

We have travel insurance with our bank. My DH phoned asking for a copy of the policy as we need it to send before we go on our cruise at the end of August. What did they send? A brochure!!! Why can't anyone get anything right the first time of asking. We'll have to phone again and this time make sure they really understand what we want.

World First and Stay Sure have been recommended to me. I use Stay sure this year and they were very reasonable for arthritis, high blood pressure on medication and high cholesterol not on meds.

I am in my seventies with some health problems. I paid over £300 insurance for a holiday in Cuba this year. A friend told me about NFOP. It covers people who have pensions such as civil service pensions. I have a bank pension and it covers me. There are two rules: your doctor must be happy for you to go on holiday and you must not have a terminal diagnosis. No other questions seem to be asked but as I know I am due another CT scan next February, I did phone for a chat. I went through the formality of checking with the doctor at the hospital that he was happy for me to go on holiday. The annual cost is about £216. I am very happy with it but hesitate to recommend it because I don't know anyone who has made a claim! A barrister friend who has also gone with them read the small print so I didn't bother. You have to be under 80 when you start with them.

I am now in the crazy situation where I cannot get cover for ANYTHING (theft of luggage, accident etc.) because I have one medical condition as yet undiagnosed. I fully expected to have that condition not allowed, but for them to refuse to insure me at all seems utterly bonkers!

jeanie99 Thu 29-Mar-18 10:30:36

You can get medical cover just need to keep phoning the different companies it's a bit of a pain but that's all you can do to get what you want at a reasonable amount.
We are in our early 70s have medical conditions but some companies will not cover hubby for his condition.
Keep clear of world wide cover which will cost the most so keep your holidays in Europe.
Staysure travel insurance would not pay out to us when we had things stolen because they were covered on our household insurance.
Best of luck

Have had brilliant service in the past from John Lewis travel insurance. Then OH reached the grand age of 75 and JL said they would no longer provide an annual policy. However, Insureandgo have come up trumps.

Jaymbee and spottysox, our Insurance is up for renewal in a couple of weeks, I’ll give your recommendations a go! Thanks

Saga refused to insure me. JustTravel have for the past three years, reasonable Prices and you speak to a person, rather than filling in endless forms on line

I ve just paid £ 17 ( 73 yr old) for a single trip ( Europe) with RAC mind you I have no medical problems apart from all the usual aches and pains of aging and deteriating eyesight I paid 30 something to NZ couple of years back I think that was AA

My husband also has had a stent fitted, and has to take tablets for his heart, blood pressure and cholesterol as well as his and my other health issues. We buy our travel insurance from Marks and Spencer or Aviva, both are very good. For a single trip of around a week for both of us to say Spain sunshine it's around £40-50. We are both in our 60s

Try Holidaysafe, this was the only one that quoted me an affordable cover to the USA ( £160 instead of £600). the maximum length of holiday they cover is 31 days. They just need to know what medications you are taking.

Sar53, the problem with having exclusions on your Insurance is that the Insurance Company will do all they can to link the problem that is covered with one that is excluded. Ie. If your DH were to fall and hurt himself, they might say that it was due to his Hip problem.
Having said that, as you say, it’s Europe and we have reciprocal health care with EU countries.
Although after my DHs experience in a Portuguese hospital I would prefer to go to a Private hospital any time.

Sar53 Tue 06-Mar-18 21:40:35

Oopsadaisy12 it all depends what the conditions are. The conditions excluded for my OH are not going to cause him problems on a weeks holiday in Europe. If he were to be covered for them it would cost thousands and we would never go away.

Oopsadaisy12 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:40:47

You don’t want an insurance policy that excludes your conditions. That’s why there aren’t many companies to choose from.

Apple10 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:31:29

I will Luckygirl.

Apple10 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:30:47

Thank you ladies for your help and advice. I will be phoning the companies mentioned. It is insurance for a week’s holiday in Europe. Hopefully, to go to either Greece or Spain.

Oopsadaisy12 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:20:12

Sorry just spotted Caribbean Cruise, DH got a quote for a holiday in Florida £540 per week! We probably won’t go back there any time soon.

Oopsadaisy12 Tue 06-Mar-18 18:19:14

Silver surf, I imagine that if you fall very ill on a cruise they might have to helicopter you off? Or was that just for a Mediterranean Cruise?

chelseababy Tue 06-Mar-18 17:55:40

Have you tried Goodtogo. com? They were one of the few who would insure my oh who has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Sar53 Tue 06-Mar-18 17:00:32

We are off to Cyprus next month and have a year's insurance with Insureandgo.
My OH has, in the last few years, been treated for Hodgkin Lymphoma, has Type 2 diabetes and last September had a hip revision. Insureandgo will exclude these conditions when they insure him. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol which are covered. We pay about £120.00 for a year's cover.
You need to speak to them by phone and I have always found them to be very helpful.

silversurf Tue 06-Mar-18 15:35:06

Not happy with Saga insurance (love their holidays), just got a quote for two weeks Caribbean cruise, nearly £1700, more than the cost of the cruise.
I expect this is due to my age, mid seventies, and a couple of medical conditions, neither of them life threatening.
Got a quote for less than half that, but several companies refused cover altogether.

Oopsadaisy12 Tue 06-Mar-18 13:41:37

Kittykat, NZ shouldn’t be too bad, Australia was on a par with Europe, mind you it was several years ago.
Why not ask them for a quote now? It would give you a rough idea.
I always go for a joint Insurance, that way if one of us is ill we both get brought home and I never Insure for the UK, it costs too much.
