My gp has referred me for an MRI scan as I am still having problems after sciatica attack last November. I have read that there is a lot of noise involved whilst in the scanner and i was wondering how easy is it to follow technians orders when you wear hearing aids normaly, i presume you have to take them out as they have batteries. Anyone got experience of this??.

The noise is intermittent and you get earphones which play music of your choice. I think you just have to stay very still so the technician would not need to give further instruction.
Have a word when you get there. Lots of people use hearing aids, they will be used to it. Good luck anyway.

travelsafar, don't worry about being able to hear instructions. As said previously, the radiographers talk to you through headphones, so can hear all the instructions,
It does get intermittently noisy and the first time you hear the loud noise you may get a fright.

I have had lots over the years and have always found staff to be very kind. The most important thing is to lie still, which is difficult if you are in pain. The worst thing that happened to me was that I had an itchy nose and couldn't scratch it! grin.

I have had full body scans and that takes some time, so I find ways to distract myself. Usually I take myself back to a happy memory or count backwards and forwards to 100 in a foreign language. (I know, I'm a bit odd! grin. )
At my last MRI, the radiographers thought I had died, as I was so still. I just wanted to get it over and done with, so I was very determined not to move.
The anticipation is worse than the actual procedure, so don't worry.

Good luck and I hope you get some relief from your pain.

I've had many MRI scans. Lately the instructions are on a recording which plays as needed when you have to hold your breath . The recording is very easy to hear. The noise of the scanner is only occasional and is not particularly loud. I'm sure you'll be fine. The operator is only a few feet away from you so you get all the support that you need.

It is not a problem as the instructions come through the headphones that you will be wearing. You can take a CD of music to be played too; then the voice just chips in through the music now and again.

The noise is not at all troublesome - I always say it is a bit like being in a washing machine!
