Hi everyone, This is my 1st posting so hope someone can help..I'm 57 & having to have a tooth extraction, first one since I was a child, I'm dreading it, I suffer with TMJ & Bruxism, have done for years & my teeth has sufferd because of this, but I'm terrified that once I have one tooth removed it may cause so many problems for my other teeth. I know this most probably sounds quite petty compared some other people's problems but my teeth have always been my pride & joy, & my dentist has always done as much as he could to save them ( they have cracked badly over the years) even though I wear a mouth guard religiously every night. I would like other people's opinions on how they have coped & also whether they have choosen to have dental implants to replace the tooth, I have researched & found them to be quite costly, thank you for any replies, I would be so grateful x

It depends where the tooth is and whether or not the gap will show.
I had one out years ago, near the back and the gap is not visible (well, I don't think so anyway). It's never caused a problem - but the tooth did cause a lot of problems and I was glad to get rid of it.

If it did show I would definitely consider an implant rather than a false tooth.

The only person who can really advise you re an implant is a dentist who does that work. It’s not always possible to have an implant for example issues around bone density . It sounds like you have a good dentist so talk to him and if he’s not qualified to do implants, he should be able to refer you to someone good. Do not be tempted by implants offered abroad

Thank you Jalima1108 & maryeliza54 for your replies, much appreciated x The tooth is a molar tooth at the back of my mouth so i would not think it would be noticed when i smile smile so hopefully that won't be a problem. Yes, think i'll speak to Dentist regarding needing an implant, many thanks both x

I had a tooth taken out as an adult but left the gap as it doesn't show. Unless your tooth is in the front I wouldn't bother to have any kind of replacement. Your gum space goes a bit harder over time but I've never had any problems

I ve lost back teeth over the years and because the6 are back ones have left things as they are as long as they don’t show when I smile I have left things alone I couldn’t afford implants anyway My friend paid hundreds and hundreds for a back tooth implant which then went wrong and had to be redone
Others are right talk to the dentist but be aware dentist are there to make money even NHS dentists

I've lost only back teeth and haven't had them replaced. No gaps show and no problems at all.
I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the extraction was - 4 years ago. A tooth, which had a huge filling many years ago, broke and couldn't be repaired.
My immediate advice would be (especially if it's a bottom tooth) to ask if the dentist thinks you might need to have an anti-biotic handy in case of infection.

Thanks for all your comments , TwiceAsNice,BlueBelle & mcem x The tooth that needs extracting is a large molar at the upper, right back side of my mouth, tbh, I've had problem's for years with this tooth but I know that Dentist's will only remove the tooth as a last option. But I will be so glad to finally get rid of this constant gnawing pain, just have to make the appointment now[ wink] I think I'm still stupidly wishing that overnight it will magically stop hurting..Time to make that call..thanks again everyone for taking the time to answer, much appreciated x

I’m assuming that you have already consulted a dentist, and has he ruled out a root canal procedure? I had one some years ago and it saved a large back tooth from being extracted.

Wren5 Tue 26-Jun-18 08:43:36

Hi Greyduster,
yes, I've been to the dentist, had antibiotics initially, then he filed my tooth down & refilled with new filling but it hasn't made any difference, he said if that didn't work the only option left was extraction sadly .

Wren5 I understand you trepidation. I had to have a back tooth removed in September after years of abscesses etc probably costing overall about £2000. The tooth finally came to an end in September and the dentist said it must come out. He did it straight away with lots of anaesthetic and apart from a bit of pulling I felt no pain except the bill!!! Good luck with it - better out than in. The dentist is only person who can advise properly for you re implants.

Jalima1108 Tue 26-Jun-18 09:59:29

Just a ps:

I did wonder if I had a molar removed that my teeth would move around ie the front two would not be in the front any more iyswim.
However, that doesn't seem to have happened.

The dentist at the time did ask if I wanted 'root canal work done' or 'shall I just take it out'. I didn't really understand at the time what root canal work was and she had her fingers in my mouth at the time, so I mumbled 'out'. However, I have not regretted it. And she has long moved on thank goodness.

Teetime, Jalima1108 Thank you for your comments, really appreciate your postings , I was really fretting about extraction, but reading all your experiences I feel ready to get it sorted, so thank you for taking the time to answer .

My DH had a tooth taken out recently. The dentist had been keeping an eye on it and said as long as it wasn’t causing him pain it was okay to leave it. It was a bit wobbly. When it eventually did start causing him pain, he went back and the dentist said “are you sure you want me to do this? If you tie a piece of cotton round it and slam the door, you could save yourself my fee, it is so loose!” He let the dentist do it! (I would have obliged!) ?. Try not to worry! I hope everything works out okay for you.

I had an upper right back molar extracted a few years ago. It had been giving a lot of trouble and had cracked into three pieces. The dentist just took it out there and then. I had no time to think about it and the relief was tremendous! It was so much less traumatic than I expected and the result was marvellous. No need for implant so far back in my mouth. Try not to worry. It could be a farewell to pain and complications.

Thanks Jane10, it sound's like it's nothing to worry about, everyone taking the time to post to me is helping my nerves :-)

Nanabilly Thu 28-Jun-18 09:06:25

Another one here who had a tooth out but I went straight back into a meeting after it was done. Top right back molar and never missed it and never regretted it and I certainly never missed the nagging pain I had been having.
Try not to worry.

Wren5 Thu 28-Jun-18 15:43:03

Thank you Nanabilly, hope that it will be over & done before i know it :-)
Its reassuring to know that lots of you have been through the experience & it's been fine , thank you for your message, really helps ..
