Mosquitos - what is the point of their existence??

I have just spent a lovely couple of days in our campervan in a French field - near enough to the coast to be accessible, not too close to be engulfed with people ( school hols started over here this week). However, the stay was totally spoiled (and cut short) by my being 'attacked' - there really is no other word for it - by mossies. Why me?? My husband had a couple of itchy spots but me - I am covered in them, Plus, I react badly to them, the site of the blood letting ('cos that's what it is) goes solid after 24 hours, gets extremely hot and ends up about 3 times the size of the original attack. As you can hear, I am feeling extremely sorry for myself. Anyone have any idea how to a) stop them attacking me in the first place and b) how to treat myself when they have? I have just taken an anti-histamine to see if that will help but I would prefer to stop them before they decide that I will supply quality blood. I have tried the Avon SSS that people talk about, plus over the counter sprays but all to no avail. Ho hum, about to hit 36 degrees out here this weekend and I cannot wear shorts 'cos it looks so bad - think I'll stay in.

I think the point of their existence is to bite as many humans and animals as possible and slurp down the blood.
Pesky things.
They do seem to go for some people more than others.
DH has only to pop his head out of the door and every biting and stinging insect within range zoom down on him,
Little knives and forks at the ready!
Jungle Formula is very good, sprays and solid sticks.

Hope you feel better soon Loobs ?

Citronella or geranium essential oils (diluted) act as a deterrent. I’ve ended up at A & E twice because of bites from mozzies and flies on holiday shock I’m like you Loobs, there could be a million people in a field, but I’ll be the one who gets bitten! My family love it because it means they’re safe grin

Nothing ever bites me. Must be too nasty tasting ???

For many birds, and indeed other insects, mosquitos are their main diet. Also certain fish feed on mosquito larvae.
They serve no purpose for the human population though. Nasty bitey little things. But it's good to look at the whole picture.

I listened to a lady and gentleman from Keilder Water talking about mosquitos on BBC radio Newcastle recently . Apparently they are having a particularly bad year . She recommended heating a spoon ( as hot as you can stand without burning yourself) and placing it over the bite. Also a hairdryer on a hot setting ( again not so hot to burn yourself) . Not sure how this works but apparently it does.

I read an article which stated they go for certain blood types, though how they can sense that I have no idea. I tend to think they bite everyone but some of us react badly so notice it.
Anti histamine pills and creams plus repellent sprays applied often and plug in mosquito mats for indoors are the best suggestions I can offer.

I sympathise with you, Loobs. They're wicked beasts, and go for me too.
Best to wear long sleeves and long skirt or trousers and stay indoors in the evening.
If I do get bitten I prick the centre of the bite with a pin and try to squeeze out the poison. Then disinfect.

Thank you for suggestions and good wishes - I have gone down the antihistamine route which seems to have relieved the itching but all areas still swollen. Bizarre that I react so badly, I never used to. I have geraniums on all my windowsills as they are supposed to keep mossies at bay but makes no difference (and can't really put them round campervan windows). Hey ho, maybe try that hot spoon / hair dryer thing - you never know.

As Lemongrove said Jungle Formula is very good.
I have been told that if you take Brewers Yeast tablets all the time they do not like the smell that permeates through to your skin.

3 weeks after I was bitten on the foot by a mozzie, or similar, the swelling has only today gone down sufficiently for me get the strap across my sandals to close. Like others, they make a bee line for me and it makes no difference what I do to prevent them attacking, or to the bites afterwards; they always become hard, painful and swollen. I was given a tube of insect repellent cream that is on sale in India and the Far East and so was optimistic that that would definitely protect me. But you can't use it on your face and so the little buggers bit all around my hairline and in the corners of my eyes. A burka is looking like a good investment this summer!

I always take garlic capsules and vits B1 and 2, if I'm going somewhere with mossies, although a good b complex is fine, they make you taste horrible and it def works for my family

Having lived in Malta for 36 years, I think I’m more or less immune to the pesky things. However, I use a plug in called Vape, which works very well. Always used them when my children were little and they never got bitten. Not sure if you can buy them in the UK though.

If/when you get the inevitable bites cream is very good at relieving the itch.

Marmite works. Eating it that is. Well it helps a lot. Marmite soldiers every morning has kept them at bay for me. I now take it on holiday with me.

And gnat larvae squiggly away in the pond, are food for loads of aquatic things. So by feeding the gnats your blood you’re helping the biodiversity of the waterways!

Menopaws Sat 30-Jun-18 01:06:24

You could smear yourself with marmite so they stick to it, but then people will either love you or hate you!

Flipping mozzies just got bitten twice in 3 minutes, whilst sitting outside with GS and Husband. Unfortunately I am allergic to them, so upping the antihistamine and spraying jungle formula head to toe.
