Dental anxiety

I dread going to the dentist and work myself up into a state of anxiety even when going for a check up. So imagine how I felt yesterday when I had to have a tooth extracted! After sitting and shivering in the car park for ten minutes I finally told myself to "man up" and went inside. My dentist is lovely and know how I feel so was very reassuring but I still started crying!

I knew I would need extra injections as I always do but it took three lots to fully numb the area - she was so patient and kept checking my gums to make sure I could not feel anything. I have an infection in my gum which has affected the bone so my tooth was wobbly. So, although I was there for almost an hour, it took her just a few seconds to yank out my tooth! It did hurt a little bit but not enough to have to ask her to stop.

I was also worried about the after care as I made the mistake of googling the procedure and reading some nightmare situations! I made sure I had soft foods to eat ( yoghurt, jelly, ice cream, soup and eggs) and had cleared my diary for two days to let things settle down. However, the bleeding stopped within half an hour, I had only minor twinges in my jaw and enjoyed a really good nights sleep. Now I can clean my teeth again and use salt rinses to help the gum to heal.

What a fuss I made about nothing! I plan to eat soft foods for another day or so as I do not want to dislodge the scab that is forming. I just hope I did not jinx things by saying this!

I hope this account gives other dentalphobes some reassurance should they need an extraction.

Hi Teacheranne, know how you feel I hate going to the dentist.Went this morning as I had a broken tooth,I was a nervous wreck turns out he was able to repair it! so all that anxiety for nothing! Sending healing thoughts sure all will be fine.

I've always been terrified of dentist and a lot of that was due to bad dentistry. All started when I had a playground accident at 9 and broke all my front teeth. Our "dentist" wouldn't do anything with them as they "didn't hurt" so I walked about with broken teeth until my teens when I had giant abcesses under broken front ones.Than he wouldn't give me jabs to dull the pain and pulled two teeth. The pain was so bad I punched his jaw.He still didn't fix the others though as my jaw wasn't mature apparently.

Through the years there have been other incidents with other dentists and I'm still scared stiff and like you need to psyche myself up to go.Currently have an appointment for next week and my stomach is in turmoil at the thought.Anyone used hypnosis for this ?
Glad it went well for you ,and hope it helps to calm you in future knowing how well it went today .

Glad all went well at your appointment, wishing you a speedy recovery, hope things settle quickly for you. Well done to you for going there & getting it sorted, I'm not the bravest when it come's to the dentist, but you did fabulously by the sounds of it.

Well done teacheranne I had a similar experience to yours last September but the pain was so bad I was able to put the phobia to one side but only with my dentist I refused the kind emergency dentist I saw in the Lake District. My dentist (very easy on the eye he is) gave me enough anaesthetic to numb my entire head and a[art from a bit of pulling it was fine and very quick. So I hope you are out of pain and comfortable now.
