New baby poorly

My grandson, born on the 1st of May, initially put on weight and was obviously thriving. He then began to lose weight to the point that the breastfeeding specialist advised formula top ups. He is quite a wheezy baby and today my daughter noticed his lips had a bluish tinge so she took him straight to the GP who diagnosed him with a heart murmur and has requested an urgent referral to a paediatric cardiologist for an echocardiogram. My daughter knows that her sister and niece also have heart murmurs, that haven't caused any undue problems, but she's still beside herself with worry. I'm away from home at the moment, about to attend my niece's wedding - so I can't do my usual mercy dash to reassure her. sad

I’m sure all with be fine, our GD was born with Aortic Stenosis, fortunately she was born in Hospital as she was 6 weeks early.
15 years later and she is just monitored annually, although she was told that she would never run the Marathon, she has just completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, (although she says that some of the girls helped her to carry her camping gear as she was a bit tired.)
Please try not to worry.
As others have said we are so lucky to have our NHS.

I had one (apparently) as did one of my DD. When DD's was detected by a GP, we were sent to see a specialist who was very reassuring that hers would cause her no bother as most do not, but if they do, then treatment would be required and the prospects were excellent. I should say that this was over 40 years ago and I am sure that even more progress has been made since.

Yes, thank goodness for the NHS - 70 years old now - nearly as old as me!

Thanks all for good wishes. My nurse daughter has now spoken to her sister (baby's mum) and been able to offer reassurance as her own daughter has quite a significant heart murmur. As someone said up thread, we are so blessed to have the NHS for times such as this.

Was sorry to hear your news ga, pleased your DD has seen GP and treatment will begin.
My aunt had a heart murmur all her life and lived to the ripe old age of 97.

Positive thoughts for the little one. As others have said these thing are far better managed and treated nowadays.

Your daughter acted quickly and so has the GP. These conditions are usually very treatable and often just need monitoring. My GD (8) has a mild heart murmur detected at birth. She visits GOS for an annual check up but is otherwise fit and well. She swims, plays tennis, dances, etc..

All good wishes for the little lad and I hope his mum feels reassured by the GP's referral and that the appointment comes quickly.

Oh I’m so sorry grannyA your little grandson was born the day after my little Evie . I do hope and pray everything turns out okay for him . It’s very Positive that other members of the family with the same condition are not suffering any problems and Good that they have found this soon so they can monitor him . I can understand your DD being so worried though. Thinking of you. X

Sorry to hear that you have this worry, grannyactivist especially hard when you’re not near to hand to support them. Your daughter has done exactly the right thing, hope now that the right referrals and tests etc will come through asap. Best wishes to you all, I hope you can still enjoy the wedding celebrations. Thinking of you X

Try not to worry too much grannyactivist these things are much more treatable now and in some cases no treatment needed.
Best wishes to all of you flowers

I hope he gets an urgent appointment and any treatment he may need swiftly.

I remember a friend's baby having to be taken into hospital many years ago for treatment and the worry at the time. We saw him again recently and he is a strapping 20 year old.

Best wishes

Luckygirl Thu 05-Jul-18 20:15:47

Hope it all goes well. What a worry.

My DGS was found to have a murmur a few months ago, but has now been told that it will right itself as he grows.
