I am trying to get rid of oral thrush which has been caused by steroids which I no longer take.

The doctor has given me drops to try and clear things up but has also suggested I get advice in a Health Shop on probiotics.

Anyone here take Probiotics either in tablet form or as a yoghurt drink ?

Your doctor could have prescribed probiotics as the chemist can get it in 'live' liquid form, but I know they are trying to save NHS money. You might be able to buy it there though. Holland and Barrett are good for tablets and advice if you are near. OH with IBS swears by probiotics after having a gippy stomach. Get well soon.

I had the same problem after long treatment with high doses of Prednisolone.

The thing to know is that thrush loves and thrives on sugar. I'd strongly advise against ANY food and drink which contains sugars whether refined or naturally occurring. That includes yoghurt and kefir and milk.

The only thing I found that worked was the mouth wash Corsodyl. Swoosh it around and leave it in the mouth for as long as you possibly can. It can be hard trying not to swallow but it gets easier. This was the only thing that worked for me. It took about a two weeks of persistent treatment. Clean your teeth and have a good rinse with Corsodyl immediately after all food and drink.

It's also worth considering that the thrush may be further down the GI tract too in the throat and oesophagus. It's worth checking out anti-Candida diets.

I second the vote for kefir (best sort I've found so far Polish in Sainsbury's - you can use it as 'starter' and carry on making your own - bear in mind it will only be as good as the milk you start with - so organic of whatever 'fat' you like. Also try Fluconazole (read about) - Tesco own £6. Not approved for 60+ so you have to buy it for your 'daughter' ;) if you do not look young - or get Dr's approval - perfectly OK but extra bother.

I began taking Acidophilus capsules from H+B after a severe tummy bug which lasted a week and left me really weak, they really worked,I have some left and take a capsule when I have a tummy upset, I highly recommend them.

At a guess he,s given you nystatin? If he has continue with the drops, they are soothing too and by the 3rd da it should be gone

Catterygirl Mon 09-Jul-18 15:43:58

I find Actimel sweet. I drink Yakult every morning.

NanKate Mon 09-Jul-18 16:17:13

Sadly Nystatin not working for me. I am taking a three pronged attack on my thrush due to Prednisolone, just like you Lilting. The H and B tablets recommended , Kombucha fermented tea, and the Nystatin until it runs out. Maybe a bottle of Cordosyl at the ready. I am fed up with a furry tongue. Perhaps the Kefir too. I don’t do things by halves.

Thanks ALL.

LiltingLyrics Mon 09-Jul-18 16:22:05

Nystatin did not work for me. It's flavoured with sucrose (sugar) the very thing that thrush needs to thrive on. I guess they put that in to make it palatable for babies and children but I can't see that it's necessary, in fact it's counteractive.

narrowboatnan Mon 09-Jul-18 16:40:15

Ninathenana they sell kefir in Sainsbury's, but it is in other supermarkets as well, sometimes in with the Polish section

queenofsaanich69 Mon 09-Jul-18 16:45:44

I use probiotic pills, wonderful, haven't had a cold in the 3 years I have been taking them,a Naturopath recommended I take them for repeated bladder infections and it has really worked, good luck.

PamelaJ1 Mon 09-Jul-18 16:46:02

As liltinglyrics says the Nystatin on prescription has sugar in it. How can that work?
I bought caprylic acid to knock out all those bad bacteria then acidophilus to build up the good ones.

LiltingLyrics Mon 09-Jul-18 17:26:49

NanKate. Our earlier posts crossed.

I know a lot of people are recommeding kefir but really I wouldn't. It's milk-based so it contains lacose (sugar). The brands that don't have added refined sugar use aspartamane which is not recommended for candida either. Nor would I recommend Kombucha as it's a mixture of bacteria and yeast and the last thing you need is more yeast. The jury is also out on whether green tea (which is in Kombucha) is good or bad for candida. Better to try nettle, peppermint, ginger or licorice teas and try to avoid caffeine.

Prednisolone. Such a powerful drug that is necessary sometimes but boy does it have some horrible and long-lasting side effects

NanKate Mon 09-Jul-18 20:40:27

Thanks for your advice Lilting I realise now the Kombucha tea was recommended on a slimming website not for thrush.

I take probiotics in either tablet form or kefir if I can get it, for my psoriasis. Really helps and I notice the difference if I run out.

NotAGran55 Tue 10-Jul-18 19:02:46

The organic kefir sold in Waitrose contains no added sugar or sweeteners and is low in natural sugar - less than 3% .

I have gone into Holland and Barrett and got lots of helpful advice on getting rid of this pesky oral thrush. I am knocking back the tablets on a daily basis. I will let you know if it works.

My dentist told me Corsodyl was staining my teeth.

M0nica Mon 16-Jul-18 08:56:04

*annep, I have had to pay good money to get all the staining off my teeth after using Corsodyl/. I was told to use it after dental surgery but it caused such a violent allergic reaction I had to stop after only using it about 4 times. It can stain that quickly.

DD has also had treatment to remove Corsodyl staining from her teeth. Her dentist advised her not to use it more than once a week at most. Apart from anything else the chemicals used in it are quite strong and as I know can cause an allergic response.

Whatever the adverts may say Corsodyl is NOT a product to be used on a daily basis, only as and when your dentist advises.

annep Mon 16-Jul-18 15:26:25

Sorry for laughing but every time I hear Kefir I think of Susan in the Archers.

annep Mon 16-Jul-18 15:34:54

MOnica just read your post. That very much confirms it then. goodness!

alansymonds78 Tue 17-Jul-18 11:39:08

Giulia can you please tell me from where you bought kifir?

Blinko Tue 17-Jul-18 11:51:14

Just bought some kefir from Morrisons. Also have bought it from Tesco. Mind you, if you ask an assistant, you get a very blank look smile

nuttynana Tue 17-Jul-18 12:30:13

Which isle of Waitrose for Kefir?
Thanks

NanKate Tue 17-Jul-18 19:54:31

I bought my Kefir on the Waitrose aisle that sells yoghurt.

chrissyh Wed 25-Jul-18 20:51:08

I use a steroid asthma spray twice a day and have oral thrush occasionally. The doctor has always prescribed tablets which clear it up quickly.
