Please tell her to go back to who ever supplied her NHS aid, i have two and they took time to get use to and time to learn how to adjust them so they pick up sounds correctly.It would be such a shame to spend so much money on private aids and maybe still have the same problem.

The NHS ones are really very good. The reason they seem to pick up every sound is that her brain has forgotten how to filter sounds.

No matter how much she spends she will experience this initially from every aid until her brain re-educates itself.

I would advise her to stick with the NHS ones until she is comfortable with the sounds around her and only then will she be able to judge if there is any advantage to paying for other aids.

Funnily enough this very morning I have been fitted with my first NHS hearing aid. Most strange, an occasional whistle and just what is all that rustling behind me? Lol! I,ve been told to stick at to re educate my brain (!) so will stick at it. I definitely agree with OP-stick at it!

And the NHS do not have a one-size-fits-all approach to aids - there are different types to be had. She needs to go back and talk about it.

There is no need to spend money on hearing aids - it is a con!

Our GP now has an NHS hearing aid because the expensive, private one he bought first was rubbish.

I am on my second NHS hearing aids much improved from the originals. They are brilliant, but I did need to have them 'tuned in' several times until they were right. Other posters mention the fact the brain has to tune in to them to which takes a few weeks. My advice is to stick with them. No need to pay a fortune for private ones.

You do need to persevere with them to get used to the tinniness of hearing the way children do. That was what they told me. It does take a while but now I can’t tell whether I’m wearing them or not until I wonder why every thing is muffled - and have got into the shower with them in on more than one occasion. The different noise of the shower alerted me!

I often don’t wear mine in cars, trains and planes as the engine noise does override conversation too much. Or in winter when I’m wearing a thick woolie scarf as I’ve lost one in the past when it hooked on the scarf. But it’s easy enough to slip them back in.

Oh, I didn’t say mine are NHS of course!
