Diverticular flare up

Following a knee operation, the strong pain killers and ibuprofen caused a flare up of my diverticulosis. Very painful, fever etc. I have been prescribed metronidazole, which isn’t pleasant but seems to be dealing with it, after 6 days. However it is still really uncomfortable to actually sit down, so it still hasn’t really gone. Any one else had this trouble ?

Sorry can’t help but hope someone else can. Otherwise dr google perhaps or a call to your GP for advice.

Oh poor you! Metronidazole is the best drug but if it’s a really bad flare and still causing you pain I think you should go back to your GP, particularly if it was only a one week course? You may need an extra course or an additional drug.

Don’t continue to suffer bravely if it’s still uncomfortable when you only have one or two tablets left, get it rechecked because it needs treating until it’s fixed.

Sending ?because it’s miserable!

Ibuprofen really upsets my diverticulitis and system, the pain it causes is horrible so you have my sympathy. Do hope you can sort an alternative drug with GP to help your recovery.

Lindadorothy
How long did you take ibuprofen for. I hope it wasn't for more than 3 days.
My Dr tells me never to take them for longer.
But (hopefully) all the suffering is in the past as I am on The Symprove program. I haven't felt so well for years.
It's only been 2 months but for me not to have any symptoms for that time is a miracle.

Well I suppose the ibuprofen was the cause.... had been taking it on and off for at least 6 weeks before and after the op, supposedly to help with inflammation..... oh well you live and learn.
Please tell me more about Symprove , and thanks everyone !

that is very interesting lindadorothy26, my diverticular disease was well under control with no episodes, and then last weekend I had terrible stiffness in my knee which made going downstairs in particular very difficult and painful. I took ibuprofen two nights running in an effort to ease the stiffness and get a decent night's sleep and then by Tuesday I had an diverticular flare up. I hadn't known of the link between them and I am glad I didn't take ibuprofen to ease the cramps ( was tempted, and can't get on with paracetemol). You are new? Welcome and I hope you get both the diverticular episode and your knee sorted. grin flowers

Hello, yes I am new, and was totally ignorant of the risk of ibuprofen and diverticular disease, seems stupid but I didn’t know. I have never taken them for so long before, but my knee was so bad before and after the op. You live and learn.
I have never had a flare up as bad as this, and don’t want it to happen again.
Thanks
Linda

Well I didn't know either Lindadorothy so that's two of us that have learned something useful from GN today! A very warm welcome to a wonderful source of support, information and friendship.

Yes I am new... didn’t know the link with ibuprofen.... no more of that for me ! The awful cramps have gone, and I am left with soreness inside.. may go back to docs after tomorrow
Thanks

I wonder if the ibuprofen gel would help your sore knee and cause less problems? Might be worth a thought .

Lindadorothy26 Sun 23-Sept-18 23:02:44

Thanks for that idea !
